UNSOUND 2011 WEBSITE NOW UP ALONG WITH A DIVERSE FOURTH WAVE OF UNSOUND 2011 ANNOUNCEMENTS!

We've got our website up, with the majority of music events detailed on line, divided according to days. There are still some surprises to come in the form of a few more artists, an extensive program of installations, talks and panel discussions. Info soon.

In the meantime, please feast your eyes on the array of names we've added, widening even further the breadth of this year's festival.

On the opening night of October 9th, retro-futurist Felix Kubin will be joining forces with Polish musician Macio Moretti to create a live score to the short film "Oj, Nie Mogę Się Zatrzymać!" (1924, dir. Zbigniew Rybczyński). Especially created for the festival, the Generator Analogue Orchestra will see Wojcek Czern assemble Polish musicians to use analogue synths to perform a live soundtrack to the Soviet-era silent sci-fi film "Aelitta, Queen of Mars" (1924, dir. Yakov Protazanov).

As a closing event on October 16th, Sinfonietta Cracovia – Krakow’s royal orchestra - will perform at the Krakow Philharmonic Hall. Appearing after Jacaszek, they will not only play works by Polish composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Arvo Pärt, but also present four sublime pieces with A Winged Victory For The Sullen, the brand new project by Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid, The Dead Texan) and Dustin O'Halloran, to be released on Krakow/Erased Tapes at the start of September.

Other artists have been added to the showcases from Not Not Fun and its dance-music offshoot 100% Silk. These include the fantastic LA Vampires, Estonia's Maria Minerva and Magic Touch - as well as the previously announced Ital, Sex Worker and Dylan Ettinger. There will also be a presentation of time-bending video clips from the label, and a LA Vampires DJ set. This is the first time a showcase of this kind has been brought to Europe, and we're delighted to be behind it!

As for other announcements, mysterious French duo Natural Snow Buildings will present their unique mix of psych folk and drone, rarely heard live.
Riding on the buzz surrounding the release of their upcoming album on Ghostly International, "Work Work Work," Australian duo HTRK will perform music designed for a party at the end of time. Mark McGuire, guitarist from Emeralds, has made a name as a solo artist for self-released work followed by albums on Editions Mego. He will present his immersive show, creating loops and kosmische grooves.

Brooklyn based Machinedrum has released on Planet Mu what Resident Advisor called one of the defining albums of the year: “Room(s).” The man behind it, Travis Stewart, will also appear with Praveen Sharma as one half of the project Sepalcure. This duo have released two EP’s with Hotflush, to be followed this year with an album. Sepalcure has performed at both editions of Unsound Festival New York – in fact, they made their debut there in 2010 - and we’re very happy to have them in Krakow.

Juke/footwork will come to Poland for the first time, with two of the Chicago scene's originators - DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn. Vienna-based Tin Man will bring impeccably executed avant-House. Slovenian artist Nightwave (aka 8Bitch) and Finland's Teeth will prove, yet again, that mutating forms of bass music can emerge from any country and not just presumed centers.

From the Polish side, Catz n Dogz will appear along with SLG, representing the recently established Polish label Pets Recordings. Krakow duo Sentel will present a set of bass music for which Poland is becoming known. An On Bast will perform a show with visuals by Phovid, one of the winners of the Unsound call for entries.

Polish trio Napszyklat’s crossover of hip-hop, noise and electronics make them perfect collaborators for a specially commissioned project with New Jersey's iconAclass featuring MC Dälek. Polish duo Niwea blends Dawid Szczesny’s electronics with vocals by Wojtek Bakowski. LXMP (Macio Moretti & Piotr Zabrodzki) use drums, bass and triggered Korg MS-20's to create blistering music; especially for Unsound, they will re-interpret Herbie Handcock's album "Future Shock.”

Passes are already on sale, with individual tickets to concerts going up this week. Make sure you buy early, as Unsound events are known to sell out.

Return to the website soon to see the full program of installations, screenings, talks and panels added – as well as a few more artist announcements.

FINAL SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR UNSOUND 2011 INCLUDING' MODEL 500, SHOWCASES OF MUSIC FROM EASTERN EUROPE AND AN EXTENSIVE DISCUSSION PROGRAM

Hold onto your space hats, as here's a late surprise announcement for Unsound 2011: undisputed music legends Model 500 will make their first ever appearance in Poland at the festival!

Image

Model 500 was started by Juan Atkins, generally acknowledged as the "Godfather of Techno," directly influenced by the writing of futurist Alvin Toffler, author of the 1970 book "Future Shock" from which this year's Unsound takes its name. Atkins has in fact referred to Toffler's phrase "techno rebels" as inspiring the description of the music genre he helped create. Atkins began recording as Model 500 in 1985, releasing the classic track "No UFOs" - regarded by many as the first techno work - on his label Metroplex. Live, Model 500 has in recent years morphed into a band including "Mad" Mike Banks, DJ Skurge and Mark Taylor.

They are added to a festival program that already presents influential artists from the last five decades of future-thinking electronic music, with Morton Subotnick, Chris & Cosey and John Foxx.

Other artists added to the club nights include Rustie, about to release his debut LP on Warp, and Lithuania's Brokenchord, who recently did a remix for Radiohead.

Unsound will also join forces with curators from across Europe to put on a variety of FREE shows. This includes The Information Pylon on Sunday October 16th, a cross-pollination of futurist rupture from new UK label Public Information and The Exotic Pylon nestling in the surreal confines of Krakow's Feniks Dancing Bar. Featuring live performances from The Haxan Cloak (UK), Ekoplekz (UK) and Stellar Om Source (NL) with DJ interventions from Poland's own Pontone, jonny mugwump (Exotic Pylon) and Alex Wilson (Public Information). Visual interference to be announced.

Eastern Bridges is an afternoon series in Klub RE focusing on artists from the eastern side of the EU and beyond, co-presented with curators and festivals from the region. The artists programmed are i/dex (BY), cross-border project The Volume (UA/KZ/PL), Silly Conductor (ROM), The Band of Endless Noise (PL), Edgars Rubenis (LV), Wo0 (SP), Gas of Latvia (LV), Kotra (UA), Zavoloka (UA), and Andres Loo (EST). These events are presented with Serbia's Dis-Patch, Latvia's Skanu Mezs, Romania's Rocolektiv, Ukraine's Kvitnu, Estonia's Stalker Festival, Foundamental from Belarus, Poland's Audiotong and Klub RE.

We've also put the finishing touches on our opening and closing night parties. Confirmed is Legowelt from the Netherlands, as well as Poland's "The Complainer presents The Shrine," a special world premier solo show of covers of 80s hits by bands such as New Order, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Visage. They will join Felix Kubin for an opening in Pauza on Sunday 9th October. The closing night party on Sunday October 16th is in also in Pauza. Joining Machinedrum will be the incredible VHS Head, Braille and DJ sets from LA Vampires and Philip Sherburne.

To say it again, The Information Pylon, Eastern Bridges series and the opening and closing events are all FREE! Admission is on a first come, first served basis.

The Unsound 2011 discussion program is by far the most extensive we've ever put together, intersecting at points with the "Future Shock" theme. "The Wire" Magazine will be holding three presentations, with a talk by Steve Goodman (Kode9), discussing sound, music and the future, followed by a Q&A with Lisa Blanning from "The Wire." Also programmed by "Wire Magazine" is a Q&A with Leyland Kirby (aka The Caretaker), and "How To Wreck A Nice Plyazh" with Dave Tompkins, tracing the history of the vocoder.

Resident Advisor will send Todd L. Burns to host talks with John Foxx and Benge, Morphosis and Poland's own Catz n Dogz, as part of the RA Exchange Series, later to be put on line as podcasts. Other discussions and presentations include Morton Subotnik, William Bennett, Robin Fox, Felix Kubin as well as talks on "social media hacking." This extensive program takes place in the contemporary art gallery Bunkier Sztuki and is also entirely free of charge.

Installations, screenings and visual thrills at Unsound 2011 will be announced in a news release coming in a few days, as well as info on Black Taxi, set to navigate throughout the city.

Head on line to check out the program. Tickets to Unsound 2011 are available at TicketPro.
