Forced to change DAW :( Help needed

Post by jaydot » Wed Aug 24, 2011 7:01 am

Had a computer crash, so I had to reinstall XP (yeah, badman OS I know. )

Anyway, I've tried to authorise a trial of Ableton on several different versions of it, and each time I get a message along the lines of "operating system denied access" (google doesn't throw up much)

I tried to run as an Administrator with a password and all but still same message.

So my question is:

What DAW has the same demo capabilities as Ableton? I'm on a PC btw. When I say that I mean saving/exporting available etc for the trial period. I don't want to have to get a crack but I need to start making music again :o I don't think FL you can export/save etc with the demo...

Thanks in advance.

Reaper is the only fully functioning demo DAW I can think of. http://www.reaper.fm

Free but not so feature rich and old

Why not just reinstall the software you had legitimately purchased before your machine crashed? ;)

Contact Ableton. I'd rather die than go back to FL.

Btw pretty positive the FL demo only lets you export mp3 but not save projects.

I used the demo of FL to make songs in a long time, but u have to make them in one session tho. If u look at my soundcloud the songs Guitar Project and Old Track, and the old WIP thing, they are all made with the demo of fl :)

OP: I recommend you install reaper or buy ableton or else you might find yourself in the same boat next month / year

It`ll just get easier as you get to know Reaper.
Check out the Reaper tutorials forum for some cool tutorial videos
Have you installed the sws extensions?
You also get right click menu mods that alter the right click menu to suite other daws more.
If you need any Reaper help, just ask.

I've asked a few times for the solution to this one about reaper, how do you get the play head to stop jumping around when you merely select a track or clip or object, whatever ch'all call the blocks. I've checked unchecked rechecked and hit the apply but 130000 times in the preferences under playback, but it doesn't seem to stop this extremely annoying behavior.

And to Jdot, here is a beginner's guide to daws.

ok, it was pretty simple to replicate.
alt+L to bring up snap settings.
adjust the grid line spacing to suite.
If you still find the cursor jumps around turn- snap setting off.
But your best option is to turn-off snap relative to grid.

i think he's on about the playhead moving to wherever you click on the timeline, sometimes yo udon't want it to move when you click. It is an annoying thing really, someone else was just going on about it in another thread. There's no way of stopping it at the moment. You just have to get used to clicking the playhead back to where you want ti to play from, or forming a loop, playing back and editing while its playing. OR making a timeline marker (right click timeline > insert marker) placing the marker at the beggining of a loop then hitting 1 > play when you want the loop to play. This allows you to edit about wherever ignoring what the playhead is doing.

yep

I`ve been sending info to nowaysj pretty much saying the same thing.
Markers seem to be the best option.

As I mentioned to him, I always just reclick the start of the loop before playing.
it never occured to me the some folks want the opposite.
