Cubase 5.1.2 Eating my CPU Usage

Hello, I recently aquired Cubase 5 and now as the title states the CPU has gone mad. Well when entering Task Manager on my Win 7 64-bit, I see readings like 80-90%. Sad when i hear clipping on one Massive or z3ta. I checked for clipping in Cubase and the ASIO meter. What should I do I don't want clipping and I feel if I get such a problem this early on my whole production will slow down. I have an Acer Aspire Laptop 2.2ghz, 8 gig installed ram, and an AMD Anthlon processor. I tried switching to Asio4All, but I can't seem to get sound, and help would be apreciated, I switched form Reason 5 to this, and with Reason no problem at all, barely used above 40% ever. Probably becuase Reason is stable and stuff. But yeah what do I do, I'm not used to this yet, sorry If I get confused.

If you've switched to ASIO4ALL and are having issues, I'd suggest raising it with Steinberg tech support - they're quite on the ball.

Have you set processor scheduling for back ground services?

You should be real anal and forensic about it. disable every plugin and syn while watching the cpu meter in cubase, maybe a particular plug, is vst2 and not vst3 but that wont really be the prob.

I used to have spikes when manipulating the sequencer window with the middle mouse button, If you report to steinberg the more you tell them the easier they can solve.

Also in win7 you should go through the laborious process of turning all the searching index crap off. I don't notice it now but I remember until I turned it off win7 was constantly thrashing the disks.

I went on Massive and tested on the Brutal Electro 2 preset (lol) and thee voice is only 1, jumps to 40% - 39% in cubase, but on taks manager 80%-75%.

*AlSO* w/o any plug-in nonsense in Cubsae it uses 28%-30% doing nothing, to mention that?

Does it show which other processes are using the extra 40%. if not then goto resource manager on perf tab and look at cpu. That's one thing.

But I have a creaky old p4 3.2ht and brutal eectro only uses 20% on global ultra.

I guess ur 64bit 2.2 is multi-core? Is it right that all 64bit procs are multi. I have no idea. But assuming it is, the 40% for brutal is a bit high.

asio latency should be ok at 256.

Is it just audio programs tha spike?

edit: I inferred that you ran massive in cubase? If you run it standalon and try the brutal preset on ultra, if it spikes at 20% then at least u kno it is cubase with prob.

Massive alone is 40%ish brutal electro, in Cubase it's the same-ish. note **NO CRACKLING IN STANDALONE**

I'm on skype and it's using 30% but I turned it off once, still had crackling.

Yes Multicore 64-bit, Is it because I didn't put asio4all on there? Because I never get sound doing that, probably I can't set it up correctly.

Well that might suggest it is related to the audio hardware.

What do you mean? Ihad assumed you had asio driver at 256, is this not the case?

I don't have asio4all in there, could not get sound. I have it tho, (note: stand-alone massive had no crackling, 40% average cpu)

I never used asio really in reason I justed used what I already had no problem, ( i didnt use it because had problems using other audio, ha dto close reaosn or had to close anything that made sound (ex: youtube, stupid pop-up)becuase reason wouldn't work then)

Well damn, just install asio? should be fine, it will provide a more direct and efficient way for the oftware to communicate with the o/b audio card. Ie less cpu.

Have you check in the manual about other alternatives?
