Ok, so to start this off, I know that for purposes of producing/mastering, I should be using studio monitors. I have a pair of JBLs in storage but I won't be able to get them for at least another month (moving situation, I have no place to live right now so its a little complicated). I have about $200 in Barnes & Nobles cards and I am going to spend them on headphones. There are a couple that I can choose from.

Avid Studiophile Q40
Audio-Technica Import ATH-A700
Sennheiser HD 518

These are pretty much the top of the line on their website. Which pair would be the best for producing?

Just my personal preference but Out of those 3 I'd choose sennheisers.

Strange you picked those three though. M-Audio were always good at the budget end, Senn's are obviously important, but you picked the Hi-Fi A700's over the more neutral and better ATH-M50's. plus there's no mention of AKG!

They don't have anything AKG. As for the M50s, they don't have those but they have the ATH-W55s. They also have M30s. I don't know if those are better than the M50s or even related. To be honest, I don't know much about headphones. That's why I decided to ask here

Perhaps also take a look at the KRK 8400 headphones, they are supposed to be designed as monitor headphones.. All marketing bullshytte aside, they sound pretty good to me. I cannot say if they are better or worse than the ones you mentioned looking at however.

Someone else also mentioned (in another thread) the Sony MDR-V6 which are a very good price and seem to have good reviews. The frequency response range on these is 5hz-30khz which is the widest i've seen (in my limited experience).

I know a lot of people who swear my MDR's, and AKG K240s, both of which are cheaper than the OP's offerings. I have kind of assumed he wanted something in that price range tho... if he doesn't mind I would either plump for them or get the M30's.

The ATH's are listeners headphones, they'll sound great, but when you take the mix to something else it'll sound piss poor, i'm having that problem with the borrowed headphones I've got atm while I wait to move house.

I swear by my Denon AH-D200's. They're quite pricey, but they sound like cans worth double the price as well as have some of the flattest frequency response in the under 400 price range.

AKG is great overall.

You can get the ultrasone pro 900s from amazon for bout 350$ I know it's a lot but they are insanely high quality cans that retail around 800$ if not I'd choose the senns

I never see anyone mentioning Grado, has anyone used them and what do you think of them for mixing?

i'm really pleased with my akg k702's. The reports of them sounding 'open' are bullshit tho, they still sound like headphones. but super clear nice solid sounding headphones.

I got my pro 900s for 300 shipped brand new on ebay. You can easily find them for 320 or 330. Not too bad considering they retail at 550

They're at £289 on Amazon. I never even realised

I have a pair of Grado SR60s and you can't beat the quality you get for that price. The bass response is freaking amazing.
