Any new Genres about?

Post by ketamine » Sun Aug 28, 2011 1:06 am

D&B died years ago (for me).

Dubstep has changed to an extreme degree in past 2 years… And I’m loosing interest. To the point I’ve just stopped buying it, and the last show I went to was… boring. But I still love the concept of Dubstep, love producing it, etc etc… So I’m still hanging on for the love I once had.

Post-Dubstep, Future Garage (Emika/James Blake/Mount Kimbie) & random Electronic Exploration podcasts are basically all I listen to now.

Skweee never happened.
Can’t get into Autonomic, or find any of it tbh.
Juke is Baltimore Club as far as I’m concerned, which I grew up with (and out of) after age 21.

Ambient is cool. Love Carbon Based Lifeforms, and random icelandic melody music like Mum.

--

Bottom line: Is there a new Genre (or sub-Genre of something) really taking off somewhere? I know, somewhere, the next addictive sound is brewing. There *always* is. I just need to find it.

ponponwaywayponponpon

i would say stuff that doesn't subscribe to genres is the future,,, stuff like damu, kingdom, holy other, actress, zomby etc... i would put your "post dubstep" artists in that category too since i can't bring myself to use the term!

@fractal - I knew someone would take issue with that, but tbh one tires of typing 17 artist names just to describe a sound. PD get’s the job done. :)

Feeling that way too mate(I love juke though, probably because i'm 17 ;) ). Lately i've started listening to old UK Hardcore to get something a bit different, but i guess you've already been there.
Maybe the newer 80-100 bpm stuff like:

and i know that you didn't feel autonomic, but i think this is a bit more half-tempo'ish:

Dont think about the future, go back and listen to old stuff!

Soul, Funk, old hip hop, trip hop stuff, classical. So much really good music out there you dont need to worry about future genres.

Moombahton seems to be picking up. One of my mates pushes it quite hard during his DJ sets now. Bit hit and miss for me, guess producers are still finding their feet with it.

@JensMadsen - Loving that 1st one! :D

@wilson - Ok first time hearing about this, so just listened to a few mixes. :? LOL “Moombahton” is just Reggaeton style House music. LOL (I actually like Reggaeton btw, so its not a knock).

--

What I would like to see is more people producing Burial style moody crackle ambient bass music, but so far, any artist attempting this is called on “Copying” Burial, instead of simply being allowed to let an entire new genre form.

--

Or, some entire new BPM format. I like how D&B was 170 and had its own kick/drum pattern.
Then Dubstep came out and 140 “bass, pace, space” etc…

Some entire new… FORMAT of electronic music needs to exist… I know it will happen. I’m just impatient?

Well like you said, Mount Kimbie, Emika, those people are pushing new things and as a huge plus for me, they also perform live. Emika's just been confirmed for a tour with Amon Tobin so yeah, it spans much larger.

Cloud Boat is out next week on R&S; As usual, they're pretty much on the ball concerning newer sounds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJp4dgcaduU

Slugabed's moonbeam rider is also good imho.

There's some good hybrids sounding like burial around, mixing up electronic music with guitar work for instance.

I agree completely with you.
But actually I enjoy the fact that there isn't really a genre name for this kind of sound atm. because it has lead me to check out loads of garage and house especially. actually techno as well.
I sugest you look into detroit house, producers like Kyle Hall, Reference and maybe drexciya and underground resistance. if you haven't already ofc.

Also I've found out that following labels instead of producers are a great way of expierencing new music/genres etc.
a good example is Hemlock and Night Slugs who put out very diverse stuff every time.
Check out german labels too, for example Ost Gut Ton - serious techno/house label with some serious producers.

I am sure you will find lots of interesting things if you check out music outlets you won't normally check. in my experience Hardwax.de is a good place to start.
