You come to DSF to learn produce Dubstep. You stay for SNH. Production section is like elementary/grammar school. It serves a purpose, and newbies learn slot. But you can't stay in there forever. Eventually you absorb all the info and have to move along. I'm very drunk right now so don't if any of this makes sense, but you get the point.

Fact of the matter is the production forum has gone to complete shit. The average age is now 14 and a quarter, and many of the recent additions to the forum list "rape" as their preferred pastime. Still cool people there, way lurking, but it is dead. Threads don't even move there any more. Come back a week later, and the same threads are still there with a few more posts each. Dead.

There was some DnB forum run by Spor where you had to audition to be admitted because the level of knowledge in there was too high... I think it was Lifted labels forum. There should something like that on here. I'm not for elitism at all.. But there's a certain pointlessness to endless "Skrillex / datsik bass" ... Where do seasoned vets go for deep info on the latest compressor software and transient shapers, without know-nothings throwing out 3 pages of useless info and more questions. Even Bob Macc has stopped posting in there. Lol

For the past few years we've had an annual thread of wtf spasm, the last one was pretty serious business Some drastic measures were suggested in there, but a pretty moderate line ended up winning the day. Wub moderates teh fuck out of the place, but honestly, I think it is too late. All kidding aside, I learned a lot over there, and met really cool people. Place became part of my workflow, strange as that is. But whatevs, nothing lasts, specially faddy genres and the forums that spring up to discuss them.

But to my knowledge page views are up, and the ads are paying nicely, so, alls good in the neighborhood.

Sorry to hear the production forum isn't living up to your expectations. Admittedly, there have been times recently when it has become a bit of a nuclear wasteground, with the same threads asking the same questions being posted over and over again, but we've taken a slightly harder approach in terms of locking threads and merging repeated information into one place so that it doesn't clutter the main board.

The Skrillex thread is a good example of this - not to everyone's tastes, granted, but by concatenating all the threads into one big thread at the top of the board, we've cut down considerably on the number of threads that are being posted about that particular topic. It's also been named in a manner to optimise it's appearance within Google (hopefully).

Regarding average age of user, that isn't something we can have direct control over. As a genre of music becomes more commercially successful, then people who are interested in making it will naturally gravitate toward the production area of the largest online site for that genre. Obviously, not everyone who likes a particular genre (particuarly one as diverse as Dubstep has become) will have identical tastes, so there will naturally be a styles clash in terms of not every topic discussed being to everyone's liking.

In terms of the board being 'dead', if that were truly the case then nobody would talk about it. Instead, there are threads being made about it being on it's last legs, but if I'm being honest I think that's more a demonstration of how people feel that it has changed from what it 'used to' be like. I fully understand that if some producers feel the production group has moved into realms where they no longer feel any connection with it, it's only natural with a genre such as Dubstep where there is such an intense level of online exposure providing a constant stream of new users, many of whom are generation-Z'rs who expect everything to be available at the click of a mouse.

tl;dr - Can't please all the people all the time; there will always be some aspects of any production forum that annoy certain people who use it.

And just a general lack of appreciation for the origins of the sound and the art & science of doing it yourself. It's like a bunch of the original producers collectively "got it" and moved on, leaving a void to be filled by the supern00bs.

It also seems to me that before many folks were already into production as a process, to some degree, and trying to work to find their sound - whereas now it's people that decided to just 'become a producer' because they want to be perceived as such... but have little interest in the process itself, in finding their own artistic voice, or in paying dues in terms of time spent figuring stuff out themselves before they ask others to show them how to do it. Like the guy who wears a black turtleneck and beret and likes to call himself a painter but spends more time talking about it at parties and cafes than actually doing it.

This trend is nothing new either though, and everything like this tends to be cyclical. It'll swing back the other way, then back again.

I think it's important that these new aspiring knob-twiddlers be challenged as well, which is why structured contests like the Samplepack comp are important. Let them show us what they can do instead of just writing off the whole lot of 'em, because I'll bet that some of the shining lights of tomorrow's music are just futzing around in there right now, trying to figure out exactly what the fuck an LFO is/does.
