[IDEA] Anatomy of a track feature...

Ok, idea I had for a new Production group feature...
- Basically, we choose one track that a DSF user has in their Soundcloud that we all agree on as being a good track, and then that user gives us a screenshot of their arrangement and talks us through what is going on, annotates the workflow with any points of interest, gives a rough breakdown of techniques used etc etc.
- So the format would be big fuck off screen shot of the final arrangement, then relatively comprehensive notes on what takes place within the track, and how it contributes to the finished product. User would also agree to make themselves available for a brief Q&A session about the track.
- I am not looking for people to submit tracks at this time, we can sort that out later.
- Just wondering people's thoughts on it as a feature?

I think its a pretty good idea. Could bring out some insight on arranging elements and techniques used.

Yeah, I think this would be a good way to learn as a forum of friends

BUT, you're going to have to make a list of members willing to share this information...
You know some people like to keep their "secrets" to themselves

We can cross that bridge later, though I was initally thinking some sort of submission, then maybe a vote on a few that are selected.

Agreed, but in this instance I'd expect the people who like to keep their production techniques to themselves not to put themselves forward.

Cool idea, hope it gets off the ground, there are quite a few forum members tracks I wouldn't mind seeing laid out like that.

Awesome idea. I hope whoever goes first uses FL Studio so I can keep up.

See, this is why it's focussing more on arrangement and song structure - a screenshot of a track is by and large a screenshot of a track (few exceptions aside, obv.), so in terms of arrangement discussion it should be more theoretical and less specific DAW-isms.

Like this, wouldnt mind participating but my screenshots woldnt be very neat n tidy... I make all my elements (my drums/synths/cinematics/ect) in seperate project files... have one post-analog recording and one thats actually for mixing... Usually amounts to 5-10 per project.

Thought popped into my head in regards to the issue of picking tracks to feature... what if the winner of the periodic 48 hour contests was given the chance to do it if they were so inclined? obviously there would have to be a seperate submission/voting system for tracks to be featured between contests, but it might help the popularity of those contests and the winners, as well as increase the interest and interaction within the anatomy of a track thread....

Of course it's a great idea! It gives members something to strive for, and helps out everyone with their stuff. I really like how this place is starting to become more and more like a bunch of people just teaching and learning off of eachother.

Ok, so we've decided this is a good idea then. Now, choosing the track(s) to be included. I was thinking one of two ways;
1) We have a few tracks submitted through, which then go to a public vote as to what the board likes the most yadda yadda and then whoever gets the most votes gets to talk about it.
Advantages - fair & democratic
Disadvantages - would be your typical voting thread clusterfuck that we have enough of round here
2) Whomever wants to put a track forward sends me a PM with their screenshot (unannotated) and a Soundcloud link to the track. I'll then have a word with Ledge and we pick the one we like the look/feel of the most
Advantages - Easier & quicker
Disadvantages - Tunes from certain sub genres would have to be something really special to stand out.
Personally, for the want of trying to get this running (at least in a trial format) as quickly as possible, I'd go for option 2.
