Jazzmutant Lemur vs. iPad and touchOSC?

Post by PatchBayJ » Tue Sep 06, 2011 6:51 pm

First post ... whay! I've been a reader of the boards for well over a year though.

I'm going to collect a Lemur tomorrow. I'm already and owner of an iPad and TouchOSC but from the videos and documentation on the Lemur TouchOSC is still a long way off replacing the Lemur V.2 software.

I'm paying £1600 for the Lemur, but since they are discontinued does this mean absolutely no support on the software side of things?

If you had the cash for a Lemur would you still purchase one?

iPad is better than the lemur

I wouldn't invest in anything that is no longer supported (especially something like a Lemur)

get an iPad and a stand and you're in business

a lot of lemur owners I know have stopped using them and replaced them with the iPad

Isn't the reason the lemur got discontinued in the first place that they knew nobody would buy one when they could just get an iPad and touchosc cheaper?

Expand on this. Without saying "you can read email. check Facebook, read books". I already have the iPad, and a laptop to do all of that.

What benefits does TouchOSC have over the Lemur?

here is an interesting article that does a side by side comparison

http://claytonworbeck.suite101.com/appl ... ur-a213029
JazzMutant Lemur vs. Apple iPad

Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a Lemur, musicians and DJs will be able achieve a similar experience with a $499 iPad running third-party audio controller software (pricing on this software remains to be seen be will likely be less than the $1500 difference between a base model iPad and a Lemur).

Apple has another advantage over the Lemur in that the screen resolution is 1024x768 on the iPad versus the Lemur's 800x600. Furthermore, an iPad allows the user to enjoy its more popular features such as Wi-Fi access, eBook reading and general portable computing in a Mac OS environment.

But in order for the iPad to be a true threat to the Lemur, a powerful third-party audio controller app must be developed. Users should also note that the iPad will not enjoy the same durability nor the benefits of the Lemur's proprietary software.

Will the iPad be the death of the Lemur?

JazzMutant's Lemur is undoubtedly an efficient and road-worthy audio software controller with a legion of dedicated users and extensive industry praise. However, the price tag is a deterrent for many DJs and musicians searching for a good audio controller.

While the iPad may never directly replace the Lemur, there is little doubt that the iPad will become a viable and popular option for those unable to afford the luxury of a Lemur – especially if a Lemur-esque iPad app makes its way on to the market.

No way in hell. They are expensive and outdated.
