Before my electronic music phase...
Incidentally, before my understanding of audio recording, I made this.
I'm sort of cringing listening to it, but it was fucking fun to make.
Really wanna get into this again. Any of you guys make non-electronic songs too?

As in like Texas is the Reason, SDRE, The Kodan Armada, Cap'n'jazz, Planes Mistaken For Starz, blah blah blah when like 80's emo buttfucked indie music and made new 90's emo.

I played in death metal bands before I started producin' and DJ'ing. Now I'm actually starting a black metal band again. Me on guitar and vocals.
Still wanna continue producing, though.

Yup american football were fantastic... honestly i see a lot of them in explosions in the sky these days. Not a bad thing. Explosions in the sky are one of the best bands around these days.
during that time I lived in north dakota so we had a ton of influence from minneapolis/illinois.... midwest/west coast got really into emo and east coast went more post hardcore
Re: Before my electronic music phase...
Emo in general was really influential to post-rock/math-rock and had close ties to it early on. Post-hardcore, emo and math-rock grew out of scenes that wanted to play melodic music with the 'hardcore punk spirit', that's why bands like Slint sound a lot like Hoover or even Maximillian Colby. Plus there's the arpeggios, build-up > climax > stripdown dynamic and vocal and lyrical styles. I got a lot of fans of Slint into bands like Native Nod because they're so similar.

Re: Before my electronic music phase...
I was in a rap group, who rapped about wizards, knights, sharks, and other weird stuff, before Workaholics existed. Does that count?
Re: Before my electronic music phase...
I've had the post hardcore vs emo conversation about 32 million times. Really it all comes down to melody and lyrics tbh. Love post hardcore , love emo, then there's bands like Hum who are equal parts both and equal parts neither.

Re: Before my electronic music phase...
i played guitar in a few shitty metal bands in high school and still have hours of audacity project files of riffs and songs i wrote from that time. also recorded some rough songs on my acoustic guitar about a year or so before i got into producing (http://ambinate.bandcamp.com/album/acoustic-demos-ep - cheap plug for bad music. i apologize.).
but i think my proudest achievement was this metal cover i made of the world map music from chrono cross, when i first learned how to record in audacity (went back a little later and added sequenced drums when i found out about reaper): http://tindeck.com/listen/wkfx. truly powerful stuff
tune in the original post is gold, though

I too was in a band. It was Riot Grrl/Punk/Ska and we called ourselves ''The Skanks''..as in skanking. Went Ok for the first couple months then we all just said fuck it.
