Hi All,

Ive had my cdjs hooked up to a pretty old sony hifi thing for the past few years but the sound is rubbish!
So was looking for some advice/recommendations

Would it be better for me to buy a cheap amp and speakers?
Or buy a more up to date hifi?

Whichever of these options, any recommendations? Probably looking to spend bout 150-300 quid, nothing too spectacular.

cheers

Wow I'm actually using the Polk Monitor 40s and the PSW505 sub! with a Pioneer receiver. You will not be disappointed with these, they're terrifyingly loud. Don't get the PSW10. I've heard bad things about the PSW10's bass accuracy and at 50 W it's not surprising.

I'll also add that I have a Klipsch Synergy Downfiring 12 inch sub in the other room that really kicks the crap out the Polk 12 IMHO. If you can find a deal, I'd go for that one.

thanks lawman, first insightful thing i've heard from you lol.
that klipsch sub is a tad too much, my room is pretty small. im gonna go with the psw505, thanks
btw, do I require a receiver? i'm coming from computer speakers, idk much about home audio :/

Yeah the Polk Monitors aren't actually studio monitors so they need amplification. My receiver only gives them 100 watts each, but it's plenty for a medium sized room. Receivers are nice when you want to hook it up to a bunch of sources, and the remote is key when away from the desk.

If you have a smallish room, the PSW505 will definitely go deep. My Michael Jordan poster wobbles like crazy when I play Sweet Shop. :D :) :D

Mate if I was you, I would just get two active (powered) monitor speakers and plug directly into the output of your mixer.

There's lots of active monitors available depending on your budget. Rokit KRK are very popular!

This is 110 watts per channel which is enough power for the Monitor 40s to fill a small room. If you want more power then you'll have to amp it (i think the Monitors can take up to 250).

Yeah, wobbles, you could go output to sub to active monitors if you want, but then you can't seamlessly switch the system over to play the Gamecube. And if you don't have a Gamecube, you should get one, they're awesome.

The speakers go into "F", positive and negative wire for each.
The sub goes into the low frequency effects plug which is that little white area above "C"

Go for active monitor speakers, plugged straight into your mixer mate.

For 300 you could get a seriously decent second hand hifi separates system that will literally blow any monitors out the water for the same price.

If I was spending 300 quid I would spend 150-200 on second hand B&W speakers and 150 quid on a NAD amp, and you will have a seriously warm and weighty little setup going on. If you aren't purely producing, active monitors are just a lazy option
