So many good producers!

I was just thinking about how many amazing producers there are around at the moment, in all fields of bass music, it only takes a moment to wander around soundcloud and you can find hundreds of guys with brilliant production skills, skills which aren't far off being as good as a lot of the well known artists are making, if not as good in some cases.
I'm thinking that due to the rise of the internet it's never been easier to learn how to produce than ever (i learnt everything i know off this forum basically). On the one hand it only increases the number of quality tunes being made but on the other makes it much harder to "break through as an artist.

The easyness of learning production is actually decreasing the number of good tunes, because it's so easy to come out with a shit one and get attention.

Maybe you'll be interested in this movie:

I've only watched the trailers, it's coming out 19th of September (free to watch on their website, you can buy it on iTunes right now, I think?)
The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunites.
But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity?
This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world’s most influential creators of the digital era.

Its a numbers game mate. easier access to production tools+software means a more saturated market specifically for EDM, which in turn means there are bound to be a higher number of high quality producers kicking about.

Well pointed out! I don't think it's made it harder to break through as such, each situations different innit. If your musics appreciated by the right people it's going to go places by itself, but I appreciate what you mean; there's just such vast quantity and so much has been done it's hard to stand out. It is ridiculous how easy it is to stumble across wicked artists now days, and it's true; access too all the information you could ever ask for on production at your finger tips and access to so much music has given boom in music. I often think how mad it is, especially soundcloud; half an hour of browsing around and i've found a couple of new artists i'm fond of. I still like to go into record shops and listen to stuff i've not heard of or know about, but with the internet I already know what I want and when it's out, good and bad in a way!

I get what you mean, it's sort of a double edged sword, internet = so much access to anything you could ask for... no internet = nostalgic and a very different experience when you find something you like..
Guess you can do a bit of both, but things are different now!

It would be perfect some place in the middle. Like internet, but not so many people that are cluttering up the business and making it a big task to get heard...I hope this is just a phase.

Hope what is just a phase... Lots of people producing? that won't be a phase.

kind of, I mean the industry having too much garbage that its difficult to find good stuff, kinda like an episode of hoarders...I guess it really doesn't matter as long as its fun making music, but it would be nice to get heard.

Honestly JR it's all about Luck & Networking nowadays...I realized this when I saw a couple (not gonna name) people who have "things" that are just ridiculous for what they do... I'm not hating..it's just the reality of the internet! Either whore yourself out to the masses or sit back and wait...your choice?

theres always been loads of shit music just previously people didn't have the same platform for it as they do now, those shitty 4track tape recordings people made at home generally stayed there.

I know where you're coming from..I feel the same..I don't wanna whore myself to the masses & being obnoxious..
I'm just a low down kind of guy I guess lol! We need to have some sort of platform for the "unheard"...

if your goal is to make money your in the wrong industry. if you cant get past the idea of making art for the sake and the need to make art, then dont be an artist.

"Whoring yourself out to the masses" is not the way to go about it I think..
it is all about networking and making relationships with people that are able and willing to help you out. I think you'd be suprised if you spent time sending some friendly emails to a couple of DJs instead of posting 1000 youtube videos.. You still have to be proactive, just don't over do it.
People say Kode9 "discovered" Burial, but Burial was sending him tunes for years..
and luck.

This^^
Back in the day, companies made multi-track tape recorders for consumers. So I'm assuming that the idea of audio engineering/music production for the masses isn't entirely new (to at least some extent). It's pretty funny actually, I've seen tape deck/mixer combo consoles where the numbers next to the faders are actually 0-10 (7 being around 0 dB). I guess this was easier for the average bear to grasp the concept of mixing.
I think it seems like there is a flood of new talent but in reality there is just a flood of ways to access that new talent.

soon music will be so easy to make everyone will make it and it will be like your personal Thing, like your garden or making food for the night. it will be done without motive for profit or reputation and will be for pure pleasure :) that will be the end of the "industry" and everyone will be happy :)
