Connecting Laptop to Monitors
I went to Denmark St. today to buy my first pair of monitors and ended up opting for the krk rp6 G2's, as they sounded good and didn't seem way to expensive.
I told the bloke behind the counter they were for DJing and producing and asked how I could set these up so that it all plugs in very easily, and he said I should connect my laptop to the mic input in the mixer and from mixer to the monitors.
Having done this it sounds balls, I can't hear the bass in my productions and the snare isn't recognisable, same with every tune I play in iTunes. So I have lost faith in asking people in 'pro audio shops' for pro audio tips and come to the DSF instead; how can I set up my monitors to my macbook? I get the idea I need to get an external soundcard, but is it possible to connect the mixer to the external sound card as well so that I don't have to change cables every time I move from DJing to Producing? I'd like to be able to just dj and produce on the same monitors without it all being too fiddly.
Thanks a lot

Re: Connecting Laptop to Monitors
Yes, If you have more then two channels OR if the two channels have AUX inputs that you can switch between.
It shouldnt sound like balls the way you have it now though, is the laptop output to hot for the mixer ? did you try different levels of volume from the macbook to the mixer or turn the gain down on the mixer itself. Im just kind of rambling knowing what mixer you have relaly is a good step one lol

I'm using a Gemini PMX-03, thanks for your replies, will try using different output levels.
Re: Connecting Laptop to Monitors
Nah it has nothing to do with the different output level combinations as it's not to do with background noise, I can eliminate background noise completely and have SERIOUSLY bad sound quality. I can hear high ends as normal but I can't even hear the bass drum as the quality is so bad. Do I need a pre-amp or something?
Re: Connecting Laptop to Monitors
What I do with my laptop and RP8's is this:
I bought an interface. The Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 to be exact. And then I bought two Balanced TRS cables, and connected my monitors with that to two of the outputs on the back of the interface. Then you plug in the USB interface into a USB port and there ya go.

Cheers, have you got any idea how that interface would connect to a mixer or do I not get away with being a lazy bastard and have to do it manually each time?ChadDub wrote:What I do with my laptop and RP8's is this:

Re: Connecting Laptop to Monitors
I have no knowledge of mixers, never even seen one lol. You don't need a mixer though, I don't think. The interface I bought has two XLR Mic Inputs, and like 4 outputs for speakers.
Re: Connecting Laptop to Monitors
The guy's chatting shit. Get a mini jack to 2xphono lead and just plug into a line input on your mixer! If there's background noise when the laptop is plugged in, but not when it's running on batteries you'll need one of these: http://www.maplin.co.uk/ground-loop-iso ... 2&t=module.

Re: Connecting Laptop to Monitors
Hello,
It possible to connect external monitor to almost all latest type of laptops. The laptop may automatically switch to the new external display on connecting the monitor to the 15-pin video connector. Please visit the following web link for detailed information:

Hope this helps.
