Kick question (yes ive read the production bible)

Basically, 2 kicks with compression still doesn't do the job. I am definitely grabbing decent sounding samples, low and high/mid. But the kick still doesn't sound tight. OR fat. Im using ableton. I load the two kicks i want in the drum rack and add a multiband compresser to each one to try and boost and reduce certain frequencies that i was in each kick. I use a compresser after the whole drum rack as well to mould them together nicely but it still doesn't have that massive punch that im looking for. I know everyones bringing this guy up these days but a perfect example for what im trying to achieve is the kick used in this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py7d9brgnmA. Its got that mid range punch but at the same time has that low thump as well.
Am i not layering the kicks right? Do i need 3 layers maybe? Or am i just doing something completely wrong? Im using vengeance electro essentials Bassdrum kicks as well and i havn't got a bad ear so im pretty sure im picking good samples to start with.

btw, i have no problem getting the snare to sound tight and crisp using 3 layers (1 with a tiny bit of reverb). And the hi hats are pretty much sorted with a bit of wide spread and little reverb. Its just the kick im having a problem with. Thanks anyway

Get one tight kick and one fat kick? o.O

Do you want a subby kick? Layer an 808 with a more acoustic one and get rid of the lower frequencies of the tighter acoustic one. Perhaps even throw a tight hi-passed hat in there, low in the mix.

Add a bit of distortion to color the kick as well.

Dunno, I never put much thought into layering kicks. When I noticed a kick misses something, I just added and EQ'd another kick in there that has everything the original misses.

Or fuck layering and just look for a decent kick.

Edit: you sure it's just your kick or the rest of the mix?
