Bikers, an SV600 as first bike?

Sup dudes,

Recently got a little moped to run me to and from university (cheap petrol, cheap everything). Jumped on it, and felt like the biggest prick on the road. I'm used to riding a CR125 off road bike ... heres my bike btw ..., this little 50cc was a sack of shit (RS50 ... the kids hype over them).

So, decided to go in and get my bike license. I love bikes, never to keen on road bikes, more off road, but since being on the road with the scooter I'm actually wanting a real bike.

Some would say why not get a 250 Ninja or something smaller. Well, because I'd rather have something that will last me a long time. Something more forgiving on the throttle, but yet has the power at later stages in my riding career to do more. I've read the SV600 is a marginal beginner bike. They look really nice, and sound great too. If I'm going to spend the next few years on a bike I want something that looks nice.

I seriously thought "pass my test, 2010 R6 straight up". But, that thought alone just shows how inexperienced I am in biking. Hence the question for bikers. The R6 is a 1 way ticket to hell for a risk taker/stupid bastard like myself.

Anyway, back to the question. SV600 idea for a begineer?

I really like those bikes. I was looking at V Twins and ended up with a TL1000S (too poor for the R).

Lots of low end power. I guess there's the potential to be a risk taker on any bike/car so get something you like/want/can afford and go easy :-)

I can't speak for the SV600 but its similar to what I'd go for, when I was in a similar situation I got a yzf600 (thundercat)- could easily cruise along motorways at 80mph with only a couple of thousand rpm- dirt cheap for petrol, but if you wanted to go for it it'd (apparently) do 150mph+.

I had smaller engine sports bikes and you just end up revving them so much to get anything out of them they don't end up any more economic, and have got through 2 engines which pretty much killed the bikes for me (£600 rebuilds)

And yeah, I'd give it a while on something like that before going up to R6, I was amazed by the yzf600's power and acceleration- such a big step up from smaller bikes (or any car I've ever driven), worth getting used to before moving up. (I still ended up crashing it and dislocating my shoulder though!)

Cheers for the response mate. The YZF came up in the posts when I was reading on the bike forums, people were saying there is a lot of power in them, probably to much for a beginner. You crashed it twice? Man, I am scared for the day I crash a bike, because it bound to happen eventually.

My mate just got rid of his 08 SV650 but it was damn nice, he's got an Aprilia 1 litre bike atm but he prefered his SV, Such a nice looking bike and a great balance of speed sound and comfort! Best bike i've been on
