This happened to me a couple months ago. Lost every sound, sample, project file, free vst, I had made or dloaded in the last year. And my machine was in seemingly good condition and not ever connected to the internet, used my laptop for that. Lost about 6 unfinished tracks I loved, 2 of which Rusko was interested in through a mutial friend, and needless to say I felt so sick for at least a month, felt like being dumped or losing a best friend to a disease. So I FEEL YOUR PAIN! It's difficult to take the time to back eveything up frequently when you're trying to balance grad school, work, a girlfriend, family, ect, and when you get the limited time to produce you want to dig right in. But trust me, BACK YO SHIT UP KIDS! It's not nearly worth the risk.

Or create a partition on your HD and have it for the OS install only and have ur OS install disk handy, just been doing that very thing all frickin night and day, had to do a re-instal. Didn't lose a thing though :h: But shit if i ever get a HD corruption, should be good though its pretty much brand new.

at least all your knowledge didn't get wiped.

taking my ass-hat off, sorry to hear that - nothing worse than losing something that cannot be re-created.

Yeah that's what my girl was trying to comfort me with right afterwards when I wanted to go on a killing spree, "can't you just make the songs again baby? " She doesn't understand the amount of little things with resampling and effects and synths, etc that go into a track. Had to buy flowers to smooth over my harsh reply to that :) Multiple lessons learned!

That happened to me maybe 6 months ago or something. I lost everything. Everything I made, all the samples I had, all the patches, all the mixer presets, everything. That was my first 6 or so months of producing I did. But I overcame it and decided to become the beast I am today.

I now have an external hard drive that I use to back up my stuff. Every week or so I just copy my Music Production folder into my hard drive, or if I do something I REALLY don't want to lose, I'll do it then.

Seriously. After I had a major laptop failure, I went out and bought 2 external terabyte drives. One to take with me for weekly backups, and another I leave at my parents house for monthly backups.

Dang, man I feel bad for you. I have been planning to back my stuff up, but my external drive is having difficulties at the moment.
...in my opinion

Once I got my wits about me, I snapped up a external hd. Actually found some older project files on my laptop that got there somehow, but they aren't really worth dick without all my patches and samples, besides arrangement. Which is really just like a slap in the face more than anything haha. Also spent a day reinstalling everything but now everytime i load up Massive it searches for all my old fav patches and gives me a pop up error for every single one thats missing, which is really annoying. Prob gonna try and remedy that tomorrow.

I lost nothing I can't get back sample wise, just a chronological list of all the tracks I did which I was kinda sentimental about, BUT you live and you learn eh :D The worst thing is after clearing my hard drive the fucking thing is still slow as fuck.

Already starting to :D I had a CD which I had backed up a few folders on of stuff I really needed sample wise because I KNEW my computer might go kaput (and hey presto it did) but no old Ableton files/patches/music/other samples etc-not too fussed as it might be a turning point for me to move on from sort of thing, if that makes sense.

I feel your pain brother, I had this happen to me twice. Lost absolutely everything. I back up my entire hard drive pretty much every night. I have 2 hard drives and online backup because I'm hella paranoid. It's a horrible feeling, it makes you want to throw up and you're irritable and extremely depressed - until the moment you get everything back how it was and make another song.

All is not lost though! There are people that specialize in data recovery that can get your files off your computer most of the time. Try to get an online backup thing, too - I have like 10 tb of storage.

i have about 5 HD failures in the last 11 years. the each time lost less and less. last year lost a drive and was up and running all samples and software in 2 days
