Anyone know about paying visual artists for album artwork?

A friend from Uni has been workig on an album cover and logo for me.
It's excellent, but wisely wants to arrange a contract before handing the bits over.

It would be a small release,
Is it usual to pay an artist a one off fee? or a percentage of album sales?

What about tshirts, obviously that would be a percentage, but how much?

If anyone can point me to a decent online guide or let me know about their own experiences I'd be grateful

a one time fee for both cover art and t-shirts is usually acceptable. i can't say how much you should pay him as that's up to you, but since i's your friend you might want to work out some kind of deal with him on it.

One time fee. They maintain the copyright over the image, and you are either leasing the imagery, or you will be buying the rights. Same for beats in hiphop production.

much more if its really commercial... normally you would never get a logo or anything big for that amount...its more like the price of a small .gif banner ...plus tax.... but this here is low scale ...so maybe he would be happy with the 100 pounds.....talk with him about it ....its always nice to have an agreement before starting ...but im sure he knows he aint getting rich from this and more doing it for the good cause and for you and all...underground music have never been very profitable and you both should know that.....

10 years ago a friend of a friend, a photographer came to me in need of some heavy photoshop collage work for a Levis double A4 add + poster + postcards ...he brought coke and weed and quickly convinced me ...and then 3 days after when all was done we talked moooney he tried to convince me that he gotten close to nothing for it and that the agency and models and expenses and shit gotten it all blahblah ...learning it the hard way ...i got a pair of jeans hah...

well on the other hand...most people wouldnt minding working for free if its a good cause...especially when it comes to music or humanitarian or political shit....and if he is your friend ...and know you ...he probably also knows your budget.... and if it all goes real well and makes you rich ...there will be a next time and a new project soon....pay back time ...so dont worry and good luck with it ;)

We met today, and am pleaseds to say the artwork is excellent.

We agreed a one off fee of £150 for the album cover including inner pages.
And £50 for animate logos for the website.

T-Shirts we'll spilt, not sure about percentages yet.
