had a few beers down the pub. Got home and fancied listening to some classic ukg, spent about 2 hours going through youtube as my decks are in the loft. I decided music will probably never sound as good or fresh to me as this stuff did when i first heard it. These are some tunes i thought the Yanks on the forum might want to hear, some are pretty rinsed and commercial but thought it would give an idea of what us folk in the uk, london especially listened to before dubstep. You can see why some of us love sub bass from some of these tunes, and why most of think brostep lacks a bit of soul.
Would be cool if people could add more tunes to the list, the more obscure the better, didnt really want to add any more rinsed tunes.
also what do you U.s folk think of this stuff?
In my time going out, clubbing, raving or whatever i've never seen a scene achieve what UKG did. To me it changed the face of music.

Think your underestimating how popular garage was here before dubstep
Seriously, it was becoming more common then electro techno and house for a bit as far as 4x4 stuff goes, and if you know much about the US party scenes, those 3 are like, the powerhouses, our 'classics' as far as EDM genre's go...
honestly, think it would be one of the biggest genres over here if dubstep hadnt hit with the force it did in the time it did...
Wicked list btw, didnt make it the whole way through, but you've definately tapped some essentials in there, n for that,

although I am a great fan of UKG and I listen to old and new tunes on a very regular basis, going through that list exposed for me how and why UKG never fully made it for me.
I wasn't around back then...I was just a kid listening to other stuff in the nineties. The bulk of these tracks have a lot of soul, but in the spirit of most of the club oriented dance music (that sort of had a broader appeal, like new beat and a lot of hardcore here in the lowlands) in the nineties, it was just too upbeat and too happy (suppose the drugs could have had a say in it ) to listen to all nights.
I can enjoy this in limited doses at a suiting time. But I need darker music from time to time and by that, I mean darker in mood! It's not hard to see where 2-step and dubstep were coming from and why they formed going through those tracks (granted, some absolute classics in there). And it's also not hard to see how in the wake of some early 21st century artits, sadder and more melancholic garage started to appear and it is really booming now again. Of course not all OLD garage tunes are happy go lucky, but a lot of them are...
I'm speaking from a twentyfirst century point of view though: I was never at much Garage nights (by the time I was going out seriously an drinking etc., it was already 2000-2001 or something?). If you were at those nights regularly, I'm sure they created a very big feeling of nostalgia for that period and right now it still would seem like the best time ever (much like the feelings I have with dubstep from the 04-05-06-07 period).
Again though, I like moodier and darker stuff when I go out and that's why it will never work 100% for me...but granted,a good old garage sesh can, at the right time, put a good smile on my face!

op, a lot of people in the states listen to the same tunes as you.. thanks for labeling, uh..mate.
*edit i know todd edwards is more house-oriented than classic ukg tunes, but still got love for old wookie, groove chronicles, gurley etc.
