New to the forum. Need a little help.

Post by iVyrus » Thu Oct 13, 2011 4:16 am

Whats going on guys. First off I should probably say a little about myself. I'm Mike, 25, I work as a FOH/MON engineer/Stagehand Aka a dude with alot of hats. (depending on where I get thrown that day). I've been doing that for about 3 years, I still feel im new to all of it. Been into music basically my whole life, I grew up playing guitar and bass. I can program some mean drums, but nowadays who cant.

As far as my setup goes. I have a macbook from 08 running 10.5, Pro tools 8,Ableton live 8. Digi 002R with a digimax D8, my mons are mackie mr5's and event tr8's. I also have the first korg nano series.

Now onto why i'm even here. I just started listening to dubstep a few months ago, Dubba jonnys dubstep tutorial is what got me into it. But im always looking for new shit so if you can point me in that direction thatd be awesome. But my main question is this. Ive been messing around in ableton for a few days now. As far as the wobble goes. I have a good tone that I like for it. But I cant get the damn thing to wobble. I can get a stutter going but thats about it. I was wondering if its possible to just add the lfo at the end of the chain and do it? if not im a noob w this genre so let me know what ever i need to know. And also if i can add the filter to the end of the chain, HOW lol. And just to make myself a little more annoying, I want to be able to map my nanokontrol and nanopad to ableton so I can do the wobble on the fly with the control if possible. And the drum pad just for shits and giggles. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers!
Mike

people are gonna eat you up on here for posting such a noobish question but since i'm such a nice guy and you seem to be stuck with a VST that isn't Native Instrument's "Massive" i'll attempt to help you out. In Ableton Live 8 really simple way to get a wobble is by clicking "live devices" (the rectangle looking thing under the little triangle button right below "File") opening up your audio effects and dragging an auto filter onto your MIDI track that has your KORG (or whatever) synth on it. You can then click on where it says 12.5kHz and drag up and down to produce a wobble effect. The reason this occurs is because the you dragging up and down on the filter is modulating the cutoff frequency on which the synth is playing. To modulate this and actually get coherent "wobbles" you'll have to modulate it (if you're not in session view, then click tab to get to it now). When you drag up and down on the filter you will notice a red bar going up and down on your track, double click on the line and draw triangle ever 1/4 bars or so to see what happens.

I'm really tired and I hope that made sense. I don't feel like finding a video right now so I hope my explanation on how to use ableton to produce wobbles will suffice for now but the overall theory behind it is the same for all wobbles. Use modulation on the cutoff frequency of a filter to produce wobbles, there are better filters on the web for dubstep but I'm assuming you have none of those, there is probably a filter in your synth and if there is set it to -12 or -24 db and mess with the cuttoff.

also if what I wrote made absolutely NO SENSE see the guide below on how to produce dubstep. and remember. learning to produce takes time, don't get frustrated if you suck, you'll probably just end up sucking less the more you put into it. (if that isn't the case, give me your macbook)

Dont worry, we arent that harsh to new posters unless they ignore the stickies posted at the top of the productiom forum. From there you can read guides, interviews and more about dubstep. Seeing as your already an foh/engineer type person the dubstep bible might be a good read to start with.

Welcome to dubstep!

It's fine, I had similar questions when I first started producing, some good starting video's that take you all the way through a track are http://www.sonicacademy.com/Training+Videos/, http://www.cosm.co.nz/index.php?option= ... &Itemid=94, http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.p ... 4#p2403942.

Modulate the cut-off with an lfo.
Assign a knob from your nono-control to the rate of the lfo.
Twiddle away.

OP, of course you can put the filter at the end of the signal chain. Its your signal chain innit?
