how to make sporadic random basslines??

Post by bensmith20681 » Fri Oct 14, 2011 1:48 am

hey everyone!
lately ive been listening to a lot of different djs and noticed that some of them have this really sporadic basslines/synthlines and was wondering how they do that.
An example would be Skrillex's kill everybody bass drop. First he has like a monster bass sound then it changes everybeat to a different sound. Does he just sit there and pencil all those sounds in or does he have a method to his madness?
Deadmau5 kinda of talks about it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1XyxUKLsLs at 1:43 and explains how to do something like that in ableton but is there a way to do it in reason 4?
But basically i'm just wondering how they get their sound to change everybeat another good example is with madeon songs.
If anybody has any advice how to achieve that sporadicness it would be appreciated!

just make like 5 diff bass patches that work together and put them together piece by piece to make a bassline

have you tried bouncing out a heap of bass samples, importing into a sampler and just playing randomly? just send them to voice or group tracks so the last one chokes when the next ones been triggered .. interesting results :)

try and write one bassline. then chop it up and get different bass patches to fill in different parts of the same bassline.

I like that idea majiika! I use to do a lot of sampled hip hop tracks so that will be easy to do, but in the deadmau5 video he talks about a different method does anyone know what he is talking about?

Deadmau5 is a predominantly electro house and prog house producer, he isn't the be all and end all of bass programming. a good tutorial to watch for basslines would be resos tutorial which is easily findable on youtube. Also if you can find it benga talks a bit about basslines in his tutorial, and the rusko one can't hurt to watch.

I am having trouble finding this "Reso bassline tutorial" you mentioned. I'll continue Googling, but if you can find it quickly and post, I'd appreciate it!

:)

edit - the advice from the deadmau5 video was great.
