Looking to release a tune for sale digitally.
does anybody know the deal on using short samples from existing tracks, like short vocal hits not more than a second long, mainly one word shots etc.

would pitching the sample down so it's not the same as the original recording bypass the copyright?

Pitching them down won't work as a bypass to copyright, but I think it will complicate the process depending on how much modulation you put in.

Its grey water really. If its processed then you maybe ok but i would say if its a well know sound and it still sounds a little like that well known sound its not worth it. If its a short sound cant you try and recreate so it sounds similar?

What sound? vocal?

People do it all of the time. If it's really short and you are not selling millions of copies it shouldn't be an issue.

If you're releasing it yourself, no one says you have to use your actual real name/details. Worst case, they send a cease and desist to Mike Hunt in Berlin, Germany or something.

If it's going to a label, they will advise you on this. Generally they will ask you to sign off that "I have used no uncleared samples" etc to cover themselves. If you are established or they really like your stuff, they might be willing to clear them themselves. It varies by label and genre really.
