Physically modify the deadzone on a controller?

So I bought a wired Pro Ex Controller for PS3, and it feels pretty good on the hands, buttons seem responsive, but the analogue sticks have a weak deadzone (have to push the stick more to make it move) compared to the original ps3 controller which has a much smaller deadzone (as soon as I push the stick it responds).

Is there any way to physically modify the deadzone on the controller? I don't care to much about warranty since I bought it for $20 at target, and it's not like they are going to open it and deny me my money back if I try to return it. As long as it's not after 90 days.

I tried google, but it's not liking me this morning. I just keep getting threads on 360 vs Ps3 comparisons.

I have little knowledge of how the analog sticks actually work, but I think they're just pots? If they are you MIGHT be able to make the deadzone smaller by soldering some small resistors in series with them, but that's just speculation.

I think it's just more of a physical thing, ie the thumbsticks being loosely attached to whatever they're attached to inside the controller. Maybe you can taked them out and fill them with glue or something.

I took a controller apart once (albeit a PS1 controller) and it was a pretty direct attachment, but it could easily have changed since then. Probably worth cracking it open and seeing what's what and then plan from there.
