So I was recently introduced to dubstep a few months ago, started off listening to Skrillex and whatnot... I'm not proud of it. But being me, I dug deeper into the genre, discovered this forum, along with a whole other side of dubstep I'd never heard before... and I loved it. I moved on from Flux and Skrillex and bought albums by Distance, Burial, Pinch, 2562, etc. Being 14, I don't really have the best equipment for listening, as I'm using an iPod Touch and $10 Skullcandy earbuds. I really want to explore the genre, and maybe even try producing, but I don't really have the money to do that to the extent that I'd like. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself, and also ask: What sort of equipment/software should I buy to fully appreciate the genre and even start producing a little? Thanks a lot!

A hi-fi.
A copy of Ableton.
Some sound samples. There are plenty of free ones. In fact I don't think i have ever had to buy a sample pack.

buy sennheiser cx300s cheap online theyre way better than skullcandy earbuds for bass

production wise reason is a good place to start and a pair of cheap monitors such as krks, tannoys or what i have m audio bx5as

samples different sources to make sounds and cut them in soundforge and then build a bank of sounds including hits and pads

headphone wise production wise try and get sennheiser hd25s if you can stretch to it..used ones

Dont forget a subwoofer! I liked dubstep before i got mine, loved it after i got my subwoofer! Definitely recommend a subwoofer!

get a turntable, nothing like vinyl

if he's 14 i don't see him being able to afford a turntable or or vinyl. Make what you have work as long as possible. There's no required equipment to enjoy this music

For speakers the cheapest ones I can think of are computer speakers, hi fi systems can be really expensive, and are probably out of your budget( Like mine)

I recommend building up your music collection, and exploring the sound a little more before jumping into production. Because spending 400+ dollers on monitors sucks, especially when you don't have a job. Also, if you are looking for headphones I would recommend

Sennheiser HD 25. These can work for just about anything. Listening, production, and DJing. I would invest in speakers first, because dubstep becomes much more enjoyable with speakers.

I bought a second hand one when I was 13, paid 3 euros for it LOL
got an amp from a friend and bought a load of Hyperdub stuff

Yeah, this is what I was getting at when I said I was 14. Didn't mean to sound like an elitist tool, just trying to say that I don't have much money or any decent way of making it.

Get a good audio interface if you use your laptop to make or listen to music! that and a mixer is what i used until i bought my turntables. some external audio cards designed for djing can be used for production too(since my choice for digital djing when i'm not using vinyl is traktor, i would reccomend the audio 4 dj as the best bang for your buck it has 2 channels in and out and is MUCH cheaper than the serato interface)

if you get a good pair of headphones with a full range so you can hear your sub bass, you can monitor with those(i would recommend technics RP-DH1200 though they are a bit heavy):

For listening to vinyl i started off with an old technics SL-D 202 turntable:

i wasn't able to mix with it much, but i did practice ceuing and beatmatching with it, and when moved to 1200's it felt very natural.

don't know how wealthy you are, but for listening (and for future DJing interests) I'd recommend a (used) Technics. For producing, try Reaper, it's pretty easy to learn and there's a topic for troubleshooting on the forum. Tons of free vstis to get you started:
