Usb to Midi converter response rate?

Hi I've found a really good cheap midi keyboard on Ebay, but it's only a USB connection, I'm planning on buying a converter which turns the USB into MIDI. Has anyone had any experience with these converters? Do they cause a noticeable delay, when compared with a straight MIDI to MIDI connection?

Oh crap I've just realised something, is midi to usb converters so that midi keyboards can be plugged into a usb slot on a pc, or for usb keyboards that you want to plug into a external soundcard with a midi in slot?

it's for midi keyboards you want to plug into a pc not vice versa

I've tried this before and had a good 0.5 seconds of delay, it's almost impossible to play.

You will get the same with a MIDI in via your card. Its to do with your latency settings on your card and your buffer size. You may not even be using ASIO.

it's your soundcard and drivers not the system

USB through your card and your system are identical ,save a negligible USB processor overhead (<1% of a 2.4ghz processor easily). Midi is synced to your soundcard buffer for technical reasons, so any delay you hear is down to the size of your buffer (the legnth of time it takes for sound to get from one end of the soundcard processing pipe to the other) you can adjust this by changing your buffer size, but different standards have different amounts of minimum delay. That is why all audio applications for Windows should be run with ASIO drivers. They are the ONLY kind if drivers fast enough to make input devices playable(aka your keyboard). if you go into your audio settings and you are using MME or DX then you will have that half second delyay

If you don't have an ASIO option, google ASIO4ALL and download the first option that isn't an ad.
