Just a laptop....

I love dubstep! :z:

And I want to make dubstep. I have loads of ideas in my head, which I want to develop. Loads of ideas, but no money (BOO!)

I've got a laptop, a copy of Ableton (legit? umm *cough*) , and half decent headphones left over from Djing days. But thats it, and realistically thats all I can afford, seriously if I want my kids to eat then this is it!

So how far can I go? Can I make worthwhile dubstep with just the above? I know there's a massive learning curve, but will I be able to do it with just a laptop....?

Answer on a postcard!

Oh and hi.

Hey man welcome to DSF im fairly new as well :P
I use a laptop and its fine although reason is fairly CPU friendly, I would say monitors are a good investment but they can wait if you are skint just compare your tracks quality to a commercial track of a similar type. midi controllers are useful and can obviously make your music more human but they are not strictly necessary yet, but to answer you question you'll be fine with a laptop but later on you will probably want to invest in an audio interface and monitors
but once again im fairly new so dont just take my word for it

I heard mosca on the radio recently and someone asked him what kind of music setup he has and he said something like "i have a computer, some headphones, and i'm getting a keyboard soon"
I also only have a computer and some headphones (i used to have some gear, just moved to another country) and i will be releasing my first commercial ep very soon. Also going to get a keyboard, using my text keyboard to play melodies ATM be;ieve it or not
