producing and your ego

Post by travis_baker » Mon Nov 14, 2011 4:36 am

100% purity?, me personally i feell like a dick sometimes for even trying. i know im far from talented but i really love and enjoy it, although... a little bit of me feels like i am abusing music for my own selfish reasons... does any one think about how the ego can conflict whith production and quality? i like to think you can tell if the tune is made by a head that is swollen.

Anytime there is a struggle between doing what is actually right and doing what seems right, then your ego is interfering with your decision.

I'm failing to see what you're trying to say here. I don't understand how 'ego' comes into the equation?

I don't quite understand the OP - but it is relevant to some conversations I've had with peers and colleagues recently.

Basically - the way I see it, to be a musician - having an ego is necessary. Arrogance is what can become problematic.

For instance - while writing music doesn't involve ego at all... releasing music (paid or free) does. By releasing music that costs money, you are essentially saying that you believe your music to be good enough that people should have to pay to listen to it. That is not a bad thing. It also takes ego (perhaps to a lesser degree) to put it out for free... because while not demanding a price, you are still asking people to give their time to listen to it.

Same goes with performing.

I'll admit (and probably one of the few who will) - but I've got a massive ego. I've been performing classically for about 25 years now, and electronically for about 7. However, I know that I have an ego - that I think my stuff is worth listening to, buying, etc.. which is why I also work so hard. I may be talented, but talent is nothing without putting in the work to support it. So yeah - I charge a decent amount to get booked for a show, but I also prepare and practice for every single set I have ever played. I rehearse my monthly shows on SubFM like crazy - which is part of the reason I don't do rewinds, etc.. I visualize a story I want to tell with my mix, and then bust my ass to create that on a monthly basis.

My Ego is that I think I can sound good - My Discipline is that I bust ass to make sure I always do... and to always have the humility to greatly appreciate those who spend their time or money to experience my music.

Arrogance is where someone thinks they are good enough to do whatever and that no mater what, people should lap it up... even if it is sloppy, thin, and weak.

I get what you`re saying but that shouldn`t be confused with being a production dick.
If you produce music thinking every sound you make is genius you`ll most likely end up producing self-wanking cock cheese.
It`s all subjective.
Produce beats that are at the highest production level and be confident in your ability.
Don`t however think you`re great if all your doing is fist-pumping shit music.

I think you do need an ego to get your name known. for example, i dont think i have an ego, i dont think my productions up to scratch so i dont push it. i listen to soundcloud and i sometimes think "man, my stuffs better than this" but they are pushing their music to loads of groups, probably across forums and getting loads of feedback and compliments! at the same time believing that they are a step above the average.

i dunno, i find it hard to put thoughts into words.

but yer, OP, did not get this topic at all

sorry i didnt describe it very well, dont get me wrong but i just think dubstep is one of those genres that has a lot of room for unpureness... ie quotes before drop, fatness, artists names, risers, mass drops etc. i think some people namely me induldge in it at times and forget that its about originality, groove, mixing etc. not cool shit that takes away from other more important aspects of music...

I'll leave you with two quotes on the topic:

Egotism is the anesthetic that dulls the pain of stupidity. ~Frank Leahy, Look,10 January 1955

Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking about yourself at all. ~William Temple

the amount of swanning you do is in direct correlation to how good your music is :6:
