honestly...i suck at production at this point. my bass and wobbles sound great, but i cant seem to put a decent track together. i would LOVE to put out a track im proud to say is mine. so basically, i guess im asking if there is any suggestion as to how i can do this. like maybe a rule set, or maybe even some kinda simple memory thing lol. all feedback would be GREATLY appreciated. :u:

Google would have answered your question faster than we can.

But this is a very informative thread from SOS http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul10/a ... ubstep.htm

depends what you're going for? theres no set rules in any type of music, but if you want it played you gotta make it consistent, ie 16/32 bar drops, no random 21 bar drops etc

Easier for a DJ to mix.

When you're talking about a listening experience there really isn't -any- rules when it comes to a structure... A track works however it works.

true that, despite what i said, i make tunes for myself, not for a DJ. if a DJ does want them then perhaps i'd consider rearraging to make it a bit eaier

even then, fuckit.
I`ve been a DJ for years.
I never looked at some tunes as easier to DJ than others.
I play what is great, not what has 16 bars pause, 16, pause, blah blah blah

I learned this many years back in psytrance from Artists like Wizzy noise and Triplex.
9 bars before a change, 3 bars , etc.

It made things more interesting.

i like your view on that lol my majority problem is actually just the song itself, not the length or the drops, etc. basically just matching sounds so it doesnt really sound like a 9 year old bangin on a piano lol
i appreciate all the feedback tho. cheers! :u:

If your production sucks then so will your bass and wobbles imo :)

As for structure, listen to your fav records. Nearly all dance records have the same structure imo.

If I were you I would stick the the rules with bars. You wont get far imo with a dodgy structure that a few forum heads listen to on their PC.

Make it DJ friendly and try get it in the hands of someone who will play it out for you. Once you have got ur name out thee and are selling unis then think about trying to be a smart ass with dodgy structures.

dodgy structures have nothing to do with being a smart ass
it is more instinctive to produce beats the way you`d think they sound best, not just based on structure.

In my opinion when people try to 'think out of the box' with the structures they are trying to be a smart ass.

If you go with what feels normal when making music than that would be to stick to the normal rules imo.

When you have been listening to dance music for so many years the structure feels the same for all genres. Because you are so use to have tracks have been put together for so long this is the normal feel.

When you step out of that it may sound like you dont know how to structure a track together.

so for me, the structure following rules is the instinctive part.

I still disagree

But I`ll agree to disagree

I have been into dance music since 1992.
I still like tracks with minimal structure.

But you have a point and it is valid.

You can still have a interesting structure while making it DJ friendly.

One of my favourite structures is..

32 bar intro.. 16 bar 'drop' on the 48th it properly evolves (so the melody comes in) at around 96/128 bars you have a 32 bar breakdown to another 32 bar 2nd drop / outtro.

Its not "much" different but when I work with that structure it brings a more interesting evolution in the track.

cool :W:

I only go as far as to keep it 4/4 time sig and then keep things in 32/64 bar loops. What you do with that is up to you :)
