Playing own produced tunes live

This is a really simple question, but when dubstep producers are playing their tunes to a live crowd using decks/mixer, are they simply mixing the tunes like any other DJ would, or is there something more technical going on?

a tune is a tune is a tune
you mix as per usual

why would it be any different?

I don't know, thats why I asked, sorry I'm just getting into mixing and production so I'm new to all this.

I've seen some producers on a line-up labeled as "DJ Set" so I didn't know if there was a difference? Few sets I've seen with some live looping etc so I didn't know if they were mixing some of the beats live, rather than simply mixing Tune A into Tune B etc..

And just cos I'm new to mixing and production, don't assume I'm a dickhead Skrillex fan please, cheers.

:a: .

When its put a DJ Set it usually means that the person is mixing in the traditional sense..

When its a live set; it usually means some sort of on-the-fly live playing.. For instance, re-constructing beats of theirs loop by loop.

Cheers legend4ry, so is this different to what Electric_Head was saying?

So are some producers mixing sort of "half-done" tunes and re-constructing beats to complete the tune, as part of their set?

It depends on the set up of the producer.. Some people play loops together on Ableton (they'll make 30+ stems and mess around with the, with midi triggers and stuff!)

I have seen live sets where its completely made from scratch, using drum machines/mpcs and synths with some laptop loops.

Thats mental! Is this sort of thing common? What do the likes of Skream n Benga do live for example? Cheers!

I would love to see/hear a live show you've made - any links?

I think I misunderstood your question.
My answer still stands but for live performances of your own work, it will differ.
Many different ways to play live sets but if you`re just meaning mixing then it is the same.
It is essentially just mixing from tune a to b.

Wish I did, but I don't have anything recorded...definitely plan on doing it at some point and will post up a link whenever I manage to get it done :)

It's awesome. They are called clips in Live and you get all your drums, basslines, pads, fx, sounds whatever as clips and then you rock out, improvise, feel the music, tweak things, stuff like that.

You get yourself some sort of midi controller like this (this is what I use), and it's on!!

I believe they actually sync their 3 laptops together (magnetic man) and each of them are using some sort of automap tech (forgot witch one? maybe it was the novation... can't really remember though....) and they do on-the fly edits and what not? I can't remember if it was an interview or a youtube video but it looked pretty dope! check it out, my facts may be a little off, as I read/watched this quite awhile ago!
