Having a hard time finding the notes...

E minor on beatport

Sampling each note and running it through a spectrum analyzer might work, if the notes peak enough in the analyzer

You know its times like this I wish I knew music theory.

I'm at work, picking at an online virtual keyboard with a mouse, with literally nothing else to do and still can't figure it out. Perhaps it'll be easier when I get home. Obssesed with the melody.

If you can isolate the part you want, you can run it through a pitch corrector like Gsnap or Kerovee. It should show you pretty accurately the notes being played as long as it's not too busy. It helps to use some filters or EQ and cut out some of the unison if you can. The more voices in the sound the more difficult it will be for the programs to be accurate.

This is an E Harmonic Minor scale. A Harmonic Minor differs from a minor in that the 7th is a natural 7, D#, instead of the dominant. That is, it's a half step away instead of a whole step.

You have the first part. It plays up to A from E in E minor, then that little F# E, G E thing at the end.

My technique for figuring stuff like that out is to try to find a note, then the next note one by one, playing along with an instrument. I used a Garage Band software instrument. I've played guitar a long time too, so it's pretty easy to pick this stuff out I guess.
