So I can get a mixdown that I'm fairly happy with with just the drums and bass, samples going, but as soon as I try add that jukey repeating vocal the whole thing turns to poo.

Any one have some tips/ techniques for this?

I'm finding it nigh on impossible to mix.

post an example?

I been doing the same recently (well tying) and kept running into the same problem with you as soon as I added my vocal hook. I think its to do with the vocal you use and the words being spoken and how they are doing it! try using something else and it might fit over the booming 808s.

Id also be interested in swapping some tracks and seeing where ur at if ur up for it?

Not keen on the above mix but Im feeling some tracks that have 808s and looped hooks if done well

It's a very small Chicago house movement from the early 90s, pretty much stemmed from The Percolator tune, split off with Detroit ghettotech much like grime & dubstep did from garage. Gained momentum in early 2000s, then a bit of worldwide exposure the last 2 or 3 years. Still 95% from inner city Chicago. The music is made for the dancers really, not club music.

It's just one of those things you either love or hate. I don't see what's to hate though, electronic music was always about repetition and creating hypnotic vibes, I think juke does it well. Probably the thing most people find annoying is the vocals, but I think that's what I love most about it besides the odd tribal grooves.

Anyway, this thread is concerned more with songs within the bass music spectrum influenced by juke and taking ideas from it than juke itself.

Specifically getting vocal stabs to stand out in the mix without being overpowering. (if you took the time to watch any of the vids I posted you would realise this.)

Let's get back on topic.

Keep it simple, make good use of envelopes, and no effects or very little, mostly EQ. Try triggering them by hand as well, also try building the tune around vocal loops instead of the other way around. One thing I like doing is taking a MIDI file of my percussion and replacing it with vocals instead of the kick or toms.

How do you do this with midi files?

Depends on DAW, but most of them have an option in the piano roll to export MIDI. If you're using a sampler or drum machine like Battery or otherwise have all your samples spread across your keyboard, all the MIDI notes should be on one pattern/piano roll on different notes.

In Cubase, if you use Groove Agent, it can export MIDI. You can also export from the File menu, but solo parts first. In FL studio you can "save score" from the piano roll, or File > export MIDI. Can also bounce loops out of any DAW, import into Recycle, slice and export MIDI. It's not as good though because slices will be on 1 MIDI channel/note so it's like ---- --- - ---- instead of a varying pattern on different notes, which is easier to work with when pitching, otherwise it will still have the groove.
