Technic 1200 ?

I asked people on hear what turntable a kid should buy just to listen to records in his room, and i got like 20 posts or so, almost everyone swearing up and down on the technic's. Is there any difference between them and the 1210's ? Just wondering, and they plug into any type of speakers right? (I'm thinking of the ones with the yellow ring but idk the name)

If you can help, thanks a bunch for takin the time, means a lot.

They can plug into anything with phono inputs. Theres a difference in amping vinyl vs. digital though.

The 1200's and 1210's were uk/us models. only difference.

what do you think of the sl 1700s or the sl 1400 mk2's? Are they quality?

I was also thinking of buying some krk's. Those would work, right? Speakers, vinyl, and a turntable, and i'm good right?

You don't really need KRK's just to listen to records in your room. Those are used for near field monitoring for producing.

Hit up your local thriftstores/craigslist etc. and get speakers, an amp/receiver and a turntable. Earlier Technics that are not a 1200 work great amongst some other brands.

1210 are black, 1200 are silver, thats the difference, not us/uk like someone said.

You cannot plug turntables straight in to active monitors.
You need a phono preamp. This applies riaa eq and increases the signal from phono level (which is very fucking quiet, like a mic) up to line level like your ipod puts out (active monitors and power amps expect a line level input)

all Dj mixers have phono preamps, or you can buy a standalone phono preamp, or use a hi fi with 'phono' rca inputs on it

Unless you are planning on buying a mixer and second deck to DJ at some point I wouldn't spend that much on a DJ turntable for listening. Don't even need 1200's to sample. Spend the extra cash on a decent preamp and a hifi cartridge and needle.

Im in the market for a turntable for sampling atm. Wub said at some point that usb turntable is best for that, eliminates the need for a a preamp. So was looking at the Nunmark ttusb. Was then going to get oratfon cartridge. Thats surely gotta be good enough for sampling?

yeah that would be alright for sampling but personally i'd rather take it off a 1200 which i conviniently now have lol.

Yeah I now realize I don't need a 1200 . But is it hard to buy a preamp and make it work with speakers ? I have no idea how

@Trax: No...probably not rocket surgery to hook up a preamp to some speakers. Ask about it at your local stereo store. I run my turntable through the phono line of a component stereo receiver. Never messed with a preamp but it's essentially the same principle

@mitchAUS: Yea that cartridge would be fine. I use Shure Whitelabel myself. the USB turntable is probably fine too. I thought about getting one myself, but since I've got several stereo receivers I didn't need to buy a preamp so I didn't go w/ a USB one. The USB is also nice because it doesn't require you to run it through a line-in one your interface. Easy to take it over to your friend's place and rip all his 12" to MP3 too!

@symmetricalsounds: I have no clue why you'd "rather" take a sample off a 1200. The turntable itself, unless it's pure shit, isn't going to affect the sound quality of the sample.

@ no one in particular...I get why people want 1200s for DJing...but there is no fucking point in spending the money on a 1200 for sampling/listening. NO FUCKING POINT...I've been using my $150 Stanton for sampling and am more than happy. Spend the money on the needle and cartridge and preamp

@mitchAUS: I might be wrong, but I think I remember something weird about needles and cartridges w/ the USB turntables, like you can only use the ones Numark makes for the USB turntables???? Again, I'm not sure, but I think that may be one reason I didn't buy that.

his right, needle and cart have a lot more effect on sound then the actual tt. if you really want to get a good sound use a eliptical stylus.

It's all in the details. People cut dubs using 1210s, its good enough, but you wouldn't cut a master disc on a 1210, you'd do it on a proper Neumann lathe or something because that's the level of quality required.
I'm quite happy to listen to music on a shitty turntable but I'd never sample a bassline off one or record a mix using wonky decks. Whatever floats your boat though.

Lots of rubbish being talked in this thread.

Don't buy a Dj deck for listening or for sampling get a proper hi-fi turntable. There is a big difference is sound quality and design. You want elliptical needles aswell ie. non-dj needles.
