If were talking dollars the KRK Rokit 8's are probably your best bet, $500 for a pair

although if you say you are broke, but can still justify spending 500 on monitors i'm gonna assume you mean $$

the rokit 6's if you include tax and mopads/stands which are sort of necessary will come out to around 500 or less.

I have Mackie MR8's and I am so in love with them. They blow the KRK's out of the water ever single time in my opinion and 250 american dollars each.

I have been searching for speakers myself. the m-audio av40's are cheap and apparently sound good too. but if you are going spend a little more the yamaha HS50M's are amazing. although, you never specified what kind of speakers you want. I just assumed you were looking for reference moniters

HS50M's straight can't handle bass. Trying to mix sub frequencies on those things is painful at best.
