Play brostep, or no gigs at all?

Hey guys, this may seem like a stupid question to you, but as the title says play brostep, or don't get a gig. I have started mixing a few months ago, and am making my first investment in some equipment. Since I live in America, and I am still in school, you can guess the stuff that my friends want me to play for them. Brostep. I have not landed a gig before, but the only options I have are things like house parties etc, where I am asked to play stuff by Skrillex, Flux Pavillion etc. Now here is the question, would you rather play brostep and get some experience live, even though you don't like the sound at all, or just turn down gigs, and stick to spinning in your room?

Curious to see what you all have to say.

I've never dj'd, but I'm looking into it and I'd say just play the brostep.
Imagine dj'ing for your friends, everybody's cheering, drinking(?), smoking(?) and you're the one that's making it happen, you're not just another partyer.
Now imagine you sitting in your room spinnin' some o' dat deep stuff.
The former sounds funner to me, although only in moderation when you can still spin that deep stuff the majority of the time.
At least try it out once and see for yourself. That would be my best advice.
Also, how old are you? Just wondering :corndance:

16, so I can't play in clubs or anything, and yea that was what I was leaning towards. Plus I gotta get used to playing stuff I may not necessarily like.

A good DJ will lure people in with what the crowd knows and then will take them on a journey. It's not all just black and white sometimes.

I have certainly had gigs where they wanted a certain style, and then it is up to you whether that gig is what you want to do.

A part of a DJ's job is to educate. You need to be flexible sometimes by being true to yourself and giving the crowd what they want to hear.

Agree with all this. Unfortunately I started DJing house parties like this when I was in high school and you're just a glorified iPod as sad as it sounds. If you can get away with sneaking some stuff in you actually wanna play, go for it, but be prepared to be bombarded with teeny boppers asking for their trash music to be spun. Take the gigs, get some experience playing out, reading the crowd, feeling comfortable behind the decks and have some fun

Modifying your selection to fit in/get more gigs/get money/get love is WEAK.
If you enjoy brostep, play it. If you're just going to play it to fit in and get more gigs then fuck off. Leave it to someone who at least enjoys the music. I don't mean to be harsh but in my opinion, DJing is 100% about pushing music you believe in.

Mix it up. No one actually likes an hour of skrillex and borgore, right?

...RIGHT??

I have been asked "hey, play some 'dubstep'" even when I was already playing Kryptic Minds, Breakage, TRG, Hyperdub, Skull Disco tunes... that was kind of a sad moment tbh, so then I just mixed into some Vex'd and Scorn stuff. There is actual good hard dubstep, yeah.

mix it up as folks have said.
one bro song followed by a deeper, bass heavy track, followed by a banger, etc.
ease them in

You've got lots of time before you need to worry about appeasing the masses.
Just follow your gut instinct. I wouldn't be caught dead dropping BS, even if the hotties agreed to strip during 'bass cannon'.

This. This shit is just as hard but way more danceable, rhythmic and bass-heavy than most of that shit they want you to play:
