I am Benny ill from Horsepower productions, some of you may have heard of us.
Like us or not, we are currently producing some new material and would like to hear some feedback regarding the content of the future releases we have planned:

1. Vocals in Dubstep- what do people think about having female vocals in dubstep, either singing or MC'ing ( obviously there would be version as well )

2.Half step - is anyone out there interested in beats that are on the old skool tip, or would everyone prefer to hear the more minimal beats

3.Darkness and light - Are people mainly feeling the dark stuff or does anyone think the scene could benefit from a few lighter numbers ( for intro sets, late nights e.t.c. )

As you may already know, Horsepower Productions means music for the people by the people, so your opinions make all the difference. We can make it either this way or that way or any other way you like so.....

1. Vocals in Dubstep- for me it's all about subtly. anything too overblown ruins the track. i cant realy imagine an mc working over the newsounds i dream about from hp - put it that way.

2.Half step - both in combination. each have their place.

3.Darkness and light - like you say there;s plenty of dark heavy stuff so some lighter stuff would be great, exploring a slightly different dynamic i guess. i'm a big fan of the bounce you get in that sort of stuff but there isnt enough of it.

Given how much of an influence the early horsepower stuff had on me actually getting into this sound, I'd say just do what you do naturally and only good things will from it.

Looking forward to hearing anything thats coming out of the Horsepower studio in future.

obviously i echo this statement as well! we all believe in horsepower.

I guess what id say is a bit of a sythesis of what these guys said already... first and foremost, obviously massive respect for taking this attitude and throwing it out to the people, but I think what I want to hear is what is natural for you guys, the direction that you want to see the sound to develop. In terms of personal preference I dont really like too much vocal, I like small snippets that augment the instrumental, but then again, I can imagine it working if done correct, which I have every confidence horsepower would!

we did a rmx tune a while ago with femme vox and it worked a treat so I 'd say yeah go for it. Dunno about the MC'ing unless it's someone like sarah jones or maya angelou spitting verse otherwise it's grime or ragga innit ???

if by old skool you mean funky and real sounding instead of processed and bland then hell yes, we have also been trying to program real sounding drums with a funk feel at a halfstep time and are making some headway

always felt the dark stuff but it seems too easy to make given the propensity for darkness in real and virtual life...

...I'd really like to hear somethings that are light and fluffy, that i can lie back in the park and get irie with, look up and think life is good/god is great and not be reminded of the seedy underbelly of urban nightlife like the squalor, the drugs, the violence, the sex, the bullshit glamour blah blah blah

Madness. This scene just keeps on surprising me...

I reckon I would answer 'both' to all your questions. I want minimal, halfstep *and* old skool beats (definitely more old skool beats!) as long as they've got the slink. And I want light and dark, definitely - it's all about the contrast between the two in a set. Not entirely convinced I'd like female vocals in a dubstep tune, but I do like the simple samples that people have used, so if it was suitably understated I can imagine buying it....

My advice is make what the fuck music you like and dont listen to twats on the internet.

I think vocals can work in the soun but more in a sampled manner ala that MRK1 tune (ready to learn?)

as for the other two, balance is the key, cant have dark without light etetc and some pseudo philosophical bullshit.

Looking forward to some new Benni Ill. Without Horsepower productions, Dubstep might never have happened...

Make something that you want to hear at the next DMZ or at Forward. If you do what you want and if you like it, everyone else will probably like it to.

As for the questions, for me half step is where it's at the moment, but the thing about dubstep is that it keeps evolving, so no harm in bringing new sounds or different beats in. Not sure what you mean about oldshool though- if it's like 2step/uk Garage style, I'd vote against, but some of the new 4/4 tunes like Digital Mystikz Anti War Dub are soooo fresh.

Vocals... I wouldn't like to hear "proper songs" as I'm more into the trippy journey through sound, so a song would be distracting for me.

Anything that sounds remotly like Grime is a turn-off for me.

I'd like to hear all of what you've said above - variety is the spice of life.

I think something with a female vox (not Mcing) from you guys would be very interesting and I'd love you to come with some dark and light shit.... to suit different moods.

But as a couple of other people have said make what your heart feels to and it's bound to be quality.

Make whatever man.

And make all three of the kinds of tunes you are on about. Variety is the best thing. What makes great DJ sets is being able to blend bumpier, swingy tunes that are deep but uptempo with sparse, militant half-steppers. Thats what makes this music so exciting.

But I do like what Burial is doing and I think there are lots of ideas still left in the swingy format that dubstep should explore.

One thing i would *not* like to hear from Horsepower is sounding like everyone else....the innovators should keep on innovating.

Listening to Anti War dub as I write ,so
some vocals done right often makes a track.

By the way, will Dj Abstract (Alex P.) be involved in any way????

MC's are a waste of watts. Absolutely no MC's whatsoever.

I like em dark and light, breaky and bassy... it's all up to you, really. I'll make tunes to my specifications and you make them to yours--THEN we decide if we like it, that's how it works.

I'd hate to hear a bunch of pop tunes, mate... make tunes that make YOU wanna shake ya ass.
