Skream & Benga get weekly slot on radio 1
Radio 1 has signed five dance music DJs and announced an all-new show – as some of the station’s older guard depart amid scheduling changes.
Skream & Benga, Toddla T, Charlie Sloth and Friction (not to be confused with Asian Network’s Bobby Friction) will all be hosting their own shows from April 2012.
However, the changes mean that Judge Jules, Gilles Peterson, Kissy Sell Out and Fabio & Grooverider will be leaving Radio 1 next year.
Thursday night (midnight – 2am) will see the addition of brand new show BBC Radio 1 Residency, presented by a roster of DJ’s including Heidi, Chuckie and Kutski on a weekly rotation.
Friday night will continue to be dance music-themed, with ‘the biggest duo in Dubstep’ Skream & Benga being given the 11pm – 1am show.
They will follow Annie Mac (7pm- 9pm) and Pete Tong (9pm- 11pm) on Fridays, who will remain in their current slots.
Toddla T, who has been on the In New DJ’s We Trust line up since 2009, will broadcast his very own permanent show on Friday mornings (2am - 4am).
Other specialist schedule changes include:
- Charlie Sloth, who currently presents a Hip-Hop show on 1Xtra fronting his own show on Radio 1 on Tuesdays (2am – 4am).
- Friction will be join the station to host his own Drum and Bass show on Mondays (2am – 4am).
- In New DJ’s We Trust, Radio 1's showcase for new DJ talent and new dance music will continue every Thursday evening (9pm-10pm). Meanwhile, the Beeb says that “early next year a brand new line up of four cutting edge DJ’s will be revealed”.
- The Essential Mix will move from Saturday (3.00am – 5.00am) to Saturday (1.00am – 3.00am)
- Annie Nightingale will move from Friday (2.00am – 4.00am) to Saturdays (3.00-5.00am)
- The Punk Show with Mike Davies will move from Tuesdays (2am-4am) to Wednesdays (midnight – 2am)
- Nihal will move from Wednesday (midnight – 2am) to Wednesday (2.00am – 4.00am)
Ben Cooper, Controller of Radio 1 said: ‘‘It’s important that Radio 1 continues to develop new talent and the station keeps evolving for our young listeners. These changes to our evening schedule will strengthen the range and depth of the specialist music offering on the network.’
’We’d like to thank Jules, Gilles and Fabio & Grooverider for over a decade of hard work and commitment to music at Radio 1, and also to Kissy Sell Out his contribution over the last three years. All are incredibly talented and we wish them the very best for the future.’’
Judge Jules said: ‘I’ve had an incredible time over the last 14 years at Radio 1. I’m going to continue DJ’ing and I’m having a bit of a career change - I’m off to become an Entertainment Lawyer at Sheridans’.
Gilles Peterson said: ‘ I’ve had an amazing 13 years at Radio 1 - to be able to get away with the radical music that I’ve pushed out has always surprised me and I thank Radio 1 for giving me the freedom to do that. I’m looking forward to continuing my work in the BBC family some time in the future’.
Peterson is talking to Radio 6 Music about future projects.

11pm-1am, awesome for us who don't bother going out and having to deal with the swell-heads of the local clubs, good news

Real shame Gilles Peterson is leaving, hopefully he gets a show somewhere else. Him and Benji B are the only shows I really listen to on Radio 1 tbh.

They gotta do one last Rinse show and go out with a bang! Should be a 4 hour ting and get the whole gang to join them: pokes, plastician, n-type, chef, artwork, loefah, hatcha, mala, coki.
Would be too sick!

For all who haven't heard it from earlier in the year, go and grab Gilles Peterson's 2 hour special with David Rodigan. It's fucking amazing and rodi always comes with the knowledge.

Good news to me, fresh talent on the go, sad to see those DJs leave the station but the new slots are past kids' bedtimes so there shouldn't be any inclination to play pop-y, bland crap to generate 'mass appeal' like what gets pushed in the day

I don't think the ones who are leaving were big enough names, just weren't attracting the target audience
Re: Skream & Benga get weekly slot on radio 1
Haven't enjoyed much of the Skream & Benga R1 shows, but I'd probs pick it over Judge Jules. Toddla's decent. Gilles Peterson getting the boot makes me really sad, love his show so much. Fabio & Grooverider going makes me a lil sad too.
