Downtempo music ?

Does this clip sound at all dubsteppy ? it was intended to be dubstep, its the same tempo but i dunno...just seems to not sound that dubsteppy.

so my other question is...what is it that makes dubstep sound like dubstep ? more distant sounding drums [reverberated to fuckery etc] ? i know wobble bass is a trademark but im not really into the lfo wobble vibes. is the groove on the clip i posted maybe to rigid ?

any advice would be sweet

sounds to me like you've got to study dubstep a bit...i remember downloading several mixes and listening to them nonstop, thus it was beginning to become ingrained into my head...then i tried to make my own version of what i had been listening to (not trying to copy it, mind you)...

use reverb to make drums sound reverby?

yeh i think that's a good approach right there. There's not a huge number of sounds (and hence tracks) being used in dubstep - but this doesn't make things any easier as things like sound selection and arrangement are so important. when i started to think about producing dubstep i really didn't know the genre that well so a lot of analysis was necessary.

try grabbing a reference track and sketching out a 'map' of all the different sounds - where do they fit in the overall arrangement, what kind of sounds are they, how have they been processed with effects etc. this way you can almost get together a template for your own productions. as composite human says, not to copy, but to learn the genre. i think it's pretty obvious when a young producer knows their style of music inside out - you can hear it in the tunes. i personally think that arrangement is the key to dubstep. obviously the sounds have to be great too, but it's how those sounds flow in and out of each other that keeps dubstep both minimal and interesting.

u know, i pretty much hate garage (that's why i got into dnb) but then dnb got a bit shit so i got into dubstep... except i don't really like the garagey beats that a lot of people are making in dubstep...
people like reso make bashy tunes but they don't need garagey breaks (when i hear that swing hihat it makes me want to go out in bromley in suede shoes and a ben sherman shirt, and start holding my collar as i dance - NOT A GOOD LOOK)

personally im not really into garage, its the non garagey sounding dubstep i seem to like the most

simplicity. when i first started making dubstep i was used to making hip hop and electronica with melodic samples. as i listened to more and more mixsets i realised that less is best. but keep doing what you do rudeboy.

It's a pretty solid tune. I mean, it's not really conventional dubstep, but does that matter? This has got style and decent production. You've got your heart in the right place.

dumb opinion to have...

behind all good dubstep , as i say is a garage break.or a false impression of one by the more experienced producers.
whether it be in the hats, the kick programming, the bass swing,whatever, its there.which is what makes it good dubstep.
dnb at 138 is not dubstep.
