Mala....the next DJ Kool Herc?

As this crazy music of dubstep has evolved over the past decade, it seems to have serious ties with genres that have had staying power: Rock and Roll, Jazz, Hip-Hop.

It started as an underground movement in rooms with 10 dudes and loud bass, was picked up at a grassroots level, slowly worked its way into broader social spheres, and (perhaps) this year reached some form of critical mass (read: gone mainstream) in several different levels as it branches.

This, I think, is a beautiful thing, and says something about EDM in general.

Discuss.

What do you mean by staying power?

Weren't The Prodigy almost huge in the states too?

I wish 'big beat' had staying power.

I meant the genres development, not the genre's influences.

could say the same about most popular types of dance music (and could just as easily say juan atkins, jessee saunders, rebel mc etc)....and I wouldn't really say mala was the kool herc of dubstep equivalent, hatcha would be closer.

Music evolves but recordings keep the fossil record, so I'd guess dubstep is gonna be around as long as there is recorded music- but it'll probably evolve (already are plenty of divisions and new names for different types of dubstep) and the stuff we call dubstep now might be as (un) popular as happy hardcore is now in a few years.

I totally feel this. I guess I was just using Mala and Kool Herc as concrete stand-ins for "innovators".

But what would you say about the forward moving progression of the genre as a whole? I only think of genres like rock and hip-hop because at the time they were conceived our grandparents and parents generations, respectively, both assumed the genres were fads—and history proved them absolutely wrong; in fact, both genres continue to evolve today. You mention happy hardcore, but I would counter that it's a subset of rock, much as Mount Kimbie and Skrillex are two major proponents of very different subsets of Dubstep. I guess my argument, or at least my thought, is that Dubstep, as Hip-hop and Rock before it, is on the precipice of transcending being a derivative genre (as Rock transcended its roots in Blues for example, or as Hip-Hop transcended its roots in Funk and breaks, becoming a whole sub-culture), and is on the way to becoming it's own larger culture.

I dunno, but it's nice to think about...

And anyway, I don't even think hip hop is on the same 'super genre' status as rock, jazz, classical etc. I'd put it and dubstep under electronic music as a comparable genre size. If anything house is bigger than hip hop anyway.

I don't think he is. I think you're missing the point.

The point is, it's slowly dripping into the larger social consciousness as those other genres have before it. At least it seems so to me, although it's hard to tell at the time it's coming up.

This, we can disagree on.

I suppose, yeah. But for now—but maybe not for later. I'm most definitely talking speculatively.

Sure, absolutely.

But I guess I'm talking outside of just the pure EDM scope. Things rooted in "dubstep", which have launched dubstep beyond it's club roots. James Blake wins the pitchfork crowd with singer/songwritery stuff based in dubstep. Skrillex wins the pop crowd with hooky, ravey, agressive stuff based in "dubstep".

Wide permutation, more diversified (less niche) than house, techno, drum and bass.

Maybe at this point it's just a fucking buzzword. Sad.

I should say when I say rock there I'm talking in its broadest sense so that includes metal etc. Ok well do you agree that house is bigger than hip hop? If so surely that's also comparable to rock and jazz in your opinion? And what about mainstream peaks of genres like UK garage, trance and dnb? By your reasoning that dubstep will become a super genre did these?

I guess what I'm saying is that Dubstep is further along than any of these ever were in terms of the diversification they've brought. And even further, because of these genres, Dubstep is afforded the opportunity.

Fuck, now that I think about it more, yeah maybe not house. But still, some house DJs have begun to include that "dubstep feel" into their sets.
