I'm finding it hard to move on from Reason.

I've been using it as my main music maker since V1 and i'd like to think i'm making good tunes with it (check links in sig unsubtle plug) but i want to move on and open up the possabilities and perhaps have a choice of more than one phasor

Now my main problem is that because I've used it so long its almost like its inbedded in my psyche and any attemps to move on end up in me unable to get anywhere fast and getting frustraited. I just can never find a work flow like i can with reason.

I do have pro-tools 8 from when in was tracking bands at uni but for making dnb and dubstep i just find it awkward (again can't get a good work flow) and i've just found out if i want to upgrade to V10 i need to fork loads of ££££:c@nts:

I feel I can't be the only person that has suffered with this sort of thing and was hoping if anyone could give me any advice on how to break my sub-consious need for reason.
What DAWS did you try? what have you stuck with? was it a quick transition? do you still use it in rewire? did you give up and go back to reason on its own? do i need to stop being an idiot and just get on with it?

Hey man, I can relate, as I did this as well. I've tried almost all of the popular daw's out there (Acid, FL, Cubase, Reaper, Studio One, Logic) one way or another (friends studios, demos, etc..) and at last, Ableton. I also struggled with the change because of ingrained Reason workflow. Unfortunately there's really nothing out there that is like Reason in that vein, but you can overcome this, just takes some time and will power. I tried Ableton last year and tbh, wasn't impressed initially. But I kept at it for a week and quickly started to fall in love with it's features and ease of routing. For a few months I rewired a lot of stuff from reason, being used to it and not yet having many vst's to work with. But i bought Komplete, and a few other processing plugs, and ever since I upgraded to Ableton Suite I honestly haven't even opened Reason once. Not saying Rewire isn't useful for others, cause a lot of people work that way, but for me Ableton does everything I need and more, and does it beautifully. P.S. Forgot to mention that at first, if you're not accustomed to it, the 2 modes in Ableton can be a tad confusing and seem redundant. But I really only use the arrangement screen except for when I'm mixing down, resampling or recording a bunch of clips. So don't worry if that throws ya for a loop initially.

I did this aswell. I switched from reason to ableton, and i have to say I do love ableton.Its also great if you want to dj in a unique way. The cool thing is even though I usually use ableton now, rewiring back into reason can be awesome because I don't know of any DAW that has the absolute endless routing possibilities that reason does. So even though your moving on to another DAW doesn't mean you cant rewire reason. Its great fun!

Ableton is just the perfect workflow for me (I do have love for reason still)

I switched from reason 3 to logic. (been using reason since ver 1.0 also) And boy... I will never look back. Logic makes all those cables disappear! haha.

Seriously though, the midi editing is very similar even mod wheel changes etc. Just have to suck it up and try it out.

I switched from Reason to Cubase. I had used Cubase in collabs before, but I found that the sequencer is the most similar to Reason's (I think Reason based a lot of it on Cubase's).

There are a few things that I still would say I'm not completely used to, in that I could do stuff faster in Reason, namely routing; it was always way easier for me to use cables and have this visual cue of where stuff was getting routed as opposed to just selecting stuff from a menu. The other thing would be using sends instead of insert FX more, since I never once used a send in Reason; the CPU hit was always super low, even with reverbs inserted on every track. Using sends still kinda irks me a bit, as I find it easier and faster to get the sound I want using inserts, but you don't always have that luxury in a VST host.

Mainly though, you just gotta bear down and make a track in whatever DAW you get on with the most. It'll only get easier over time.

Probably taking this route too. I like Reason but I feel like making substle changes in synths and effects
can be done way easier with daws like Logic and Ableton.

Wait, so why are you moving away from Reason? You know it, you like it, you're happy with what you have done with it...?

The best thing you could do, and what I will do in a few days, is ReWire reason in Logic.
Just use all the functions you love to use in Reason (Redrum etc) and wherever you think Reason lacks features, use Logic.
You'll slowly get used to Logic in a slow and workflow friendly way.
