Formatting a Macbook Pro with broken CD Drive

Been a good while since I posted anything.
Broke my MacBook Pro a few months ago and just got it back a week before christmas. The Battery, CD Drive & Keyboard got destroyed (spillage accident) so I got the Keyboard replaced and its up and running again. The guy in the repair shop suggested I format the laptop and I agree because the laptop has definitely not been running to its full potential for the last year or so, plus I want to get rid of all the crap and just keep my legit software as its all I use these days anyway.
A friend of mine has an external CD Drive and I was wondering if it would be possible to reinstall the Operating System using this? or would I have to get the built in CD Drive replaced to do so?
