Bassnectar explains dubstep (in under 3 minutes)
Bassnectar laying out the dubstep musical family tree in an interview with MoBoogie (see original here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFLe3MEDwv4). This is the uploader's first try making kinetic typography (with some help from prezi).

To be honest, I really like Bassnectar. I wouldn't associate him with Skrillex or even brostep at all - he's doing something else. And his tracks are dope, imo.

+1.. his music is EDM, but he goes at it from so many different angles its hard to categorize it as any one genre... besides EDM.Sonika wrote:To be honest, I really like Bassnectar. To me, Bassnectar is what SBTRKT would sound like if SBTRKT made Brostep. It's mid-range, but still different than most Brostep tunes.Sonika wrote:To be honest, I really like Bassnectar. I enjoy Bassnectar more than most Brostep producers. And he comes from a J.Dilla-inspired background, to me that's a cool thing.

Yeah he maintains diversity while still making good music, a feat seemingly less and less seen in mainstream EDM nowadaysFluidMoShun wrote:+1.. his music is EDM, but he goes at it from so many different angles its hard to categorize it as any one genre... besides EDM.Sonika wrote:To be honest, I really like Bassnectar. typography was piss poor, bassnectar was pretty inaccurate most of the time, pulling nonsense out of his ass. "dubstep is an ultra slow spawn of hip hop"
Re: Bassnectar (tries to) explain dubstep (in under 3 minute
Yeah ditto to this. He doesn't scream in you face and/or fart into a microphone and bitcrush it for the bass like most brostep producers.twothirdsmajority wrote:To me, Bassnectar is what SBTRKT would sound like if SBTRKT made Brostep. Very hip hop influenced, which I like.
I like his material from Divergent Spectrum and Cozza Frenzy the most.

Well, he's basing Dubstep on that because his influence of Dubstep came primarily from the 70BPM Southern Hip Hop music which is influential to many Dubstep producers in America and Canada.Phigure wrote:J Dilla is rolling over in his gravetwothirdsmajority wrote:And he comes from a J.Dilla-inspired background, to me that's a cool thing.

I know many Americans who associate Dubstep with southern Hip-Hop than Grime or UK Garage. And i think that's pretty sad.

I keep trying to find this quote... cant... He lumped garage n rnb together which is a bit arguable but...brasco wrote:Phigure wrote:J Dilla is rolling over in his gravetwothirdsmajority wrote:And he comes from a J.Dilla-inspired background, to me that's a cool thing.

Also have never heard him claim dilla as an influence, dont blame the artist if a DSF kid spouts shit out his ass onto a keyboard... He talks alot about Aphex Twin-meets-hiphop, n you can hear that in his early stuff.

Re: Bassnectar explains dubstep (in under 3 minutes)
think exact quote was "so, a dubstep or grime is kinda like this ultra slow, ultra dirty spawn of hip hop..."
suppose it could have been a lot worse, but there are some glaring omissions.

Re: Bassnectar explains dubstep (in under 3 minutes)
For what its worth, 'dirty' is a longer standing slang word in the states then dubstep is a genre... and as an American, thats how I heard it, kinda like we'd say 'dirty club night' in reference to like, an upscale yet underground event.brasco wrote:think exact quote was "so, a dubstep or grime is kinda like this ultra slow, ultra dirty spawn of hip hop..."

Dont think we should be getting our dubstep definitions or history from old Glitch Hop artists frankly.

Re: Bassnectar explains dubstep (in under 3 minutes)
i agree with him up until right at the end but im really not sure about the comparisons with r&b and hip hop. think perhaps america just didn't get garage and so they've kinda missed that part of the sequence...

Re: Bassnectar explains dubstep (in under 3 minutes)
Considering he's been releasing music since anyone outside the UK even knew what dubstep was, I'd say he knows where he's coming from.
Re: Bassnectar explains dubstep (in under 3 minutes)
Yeah the jamband/burning man abortions of a scene. He needs to just stay in the desert with the rest of the Mad Max rejects. ::cringe::the_disconekt wrote:I'd say he knows where he's coming from.
