Having some trouble writing good melodies at the moment, and thought it would be great if people shared some unusual, good sounding scales
Give a description of what it sounds like (i.e sad, happy, scary etc) and also the notes in the scale for those of us less
theory-wise
I'll start you off with my favorite, D minor, just sounds so sad and emotional, also the D to the D# is a minor interval, very very dark sounding, great for basslines

Check out the Hungarian minor if you like that middle eastern vibe, but have gotten tired of the well-trodden harmonic minor. Also for dream-like vibes a whole-tone scale, when used intelligently, can be awesome.

I can honestly say - and this is just me - I never understood the notion of liking a particular key for a scale. The "feel" and "colour" of a scale is produced by the interval structure and relationship of the notes, regardless of key selection. That's just me though. Just me who's been teaching guitar for 5 years. If someone can explain why I'm out to lunch on that, please let me know - that's how I learn haha

Thats not D minor...

That is D minor, just in a different key signature with that Eb in there. Which is how you should spell it since D is already there.

A minor scale is always determined by the flat 3rd.

Yeah thats true.

I should of said, "Thats not the natural minor, harmonic minor, or melodic minor which are most commonly thought of when referring to a minor scale".

Or think before I post, speak ect.

I heard most producers tends to use E F and G for sub because they got the most effectives frequencies on a sound-system ..

So , what scale do they use ?

Producers won't limit themselves to notes because they resonate better, they'll probably just stick to the scale they use on their melody, it is true that some notes play better on big systems, however it really depends on the system, and also the shape of the room etc so I don't think choosing particular notes is going to help you

A bit offtopic but - how do you start laying the notes down - melody or chord progression first?

I know it probably varies from person to person but I just learned a bunch about theory and am trying to find the best way to apply it!

Chords first for me.

Once I have a sequence I like I loop it up and jam over the top to make the melody line.

True, unless you have perfect pitch.

It's all about that harmonic major.
