Lupe fiasco's track "Lightwork" blew up last month. If you don't know, it's a remix of "Lights" by Bassnectar. (great song, check it out)
what do you think of this?
Is hip hop defined by the drum structure or by the fact that somebody is rapping over a song? Is this song dubstep or hip hop?

From the relation between your avatar and the youtube video image, I am guessing this is some shit self-promotion.

What drum structure could possibly define hip hop? I'd say hip hop is only defined by rap, or the ability to rap over an instrumental. What a producer does musically from there is up to them, that's what makes hip hop such a diverse and limitless genre. As for that song, I'd just call it rapping over a shitty generic brostep track.
Besides, this is hardly a new thing:

1 I was basically talking about Sukh Knight... It's dubstep if instrumental, but same SK beat rapped over, its Grime...
2 no ones rapping over that beat so I don't see your point

My point was is that's grime but has no wobbles or rapping. Just making sure that no-one gets the idea that rapping over dubstep is what grime is

No I'm saying that all of those are very much still hip hop. They are all released with no one rapping over the top. I hate the idea that hip hop is only defined by someone rapping over the top.

It's not really a new genre, it's just a different way to look at an existing genre. If you guys wanna try out something cool, make a dubstep song at 95 bpm. I've gotten it down so far where the wobbles are more like scratches from a turntable than a "wub" from a dubstep song. Really fun to "freestyle" basslines over a nice hip-hop track.
