just wonderin how you all feel about a few aspects of djing

1. Do you prefer songs to be played out in their entirety? or do you feel the audience might be done with the track before you are?
- the opposite would obviously be a.d.d. like mixing with a new song every 32-64 measures

2. How do you feel about playing out pre-meditated sets? more polished works that take you on a journey
- vs. the purely improv/feel it in the moment/read the crowd kind of mixing

3. Do you approach radio mixes, err mixes moreso meant to be listened to (as opposed to dancefloor) differently?

As a listener:

Both for the first two depending on my mood. I will say that some styles, like grime, tend to lend themselves to faster mixing. The last one's more aimed at DJs themselves but I'd say that though their may be some slight differences you can usually sense the personal style of a great DJ no matter what environment they're playing in.

really depends on the sort of tracks you are playing out, personally i like the see some quality mixing, i like seeing/hearing quick mixing, but also like hearing all/lots of really sweet tracks, not that your asking for a right, but i don't think there is a right in this instance.

2. How do you feel about playing out pre-meditated sets?

i prefer improv, all about the vibe, not that pre-meditated can't contain vibe, but i definately think it would make mixing quite a bit more enjoyable, and maybe even riskier, risky is fun

3. Do you approach radio mixes, err mixes moreso meant to be listened to (as opposed to dancefloor) differently?

not speaking from experience on this one, but i would figure you would, for instance, you mightn't be the biggest/most backed DJ going around local clubs etc, so you mightn't get many chances to headline, and generally i think it's a respect thing not to steal the show before the nights even kicked off hahaha, but i think on radio it would be different, obviously your not playing to a direct/physical crowd, so you can't see when they are getting another drink
so yeah, i think i would approach a radio set differently, maybe even pre-mediated.

1. I do like it when tracks are played out a bit longer personally but understand the value of quick fire mixing.

2. Any decent DJ should be reading their crowd. I'm not sure I quite understand your intention with that question though.

3. Yes absolutely, they are both totally different experiences.

As a club and radio DJ, I like and put into practice a mix of all what you've said really... As you mix all kinds of combinations of tunes, you get know your tunes and some will just sound SWEET together, so whether I'm on radio or in a club, I always think "Oh yeah... that sounds with heavy with..." apart from those few instances, I hardly ever have a planned mix, in a club I normally play off the crowd, with a little bit of "fuck it, I like it, so I'ma play it anyway" attitude aswell, it works pretty well for me. S'always good to get a bit tricky aswell, so if the mixers got FX, or chopping up beats on the cdjs, dropping in accapella's etc...
