Ever feel like giving up?

Post by teejayem » Sat Jan 28, 2012 6:02 pm

It's frustrating sometimes. I feel like I'll never have a decent career as an artist sometimes though I work so hard
to improve my craft. But there are times where I get no support from
Anyone. It's really discouraging. I just got a whole new setup for producing but now I just want to take it back. I'm so
Discouraged right now

I'll give you my honest opinion of what I think. Just post a song you have for me to listen too.

But besides that, usually for most things like producing is that you'll get better as times goes by if you keep working at it. Just be dedicated. Simple as that.

Of course. Everyday.

I don't worry about a career or any of that. I just keep making tunes and trying to improve.

Don't let it get to you. Just keep making tune, after tune. Fill your head with knowledge, google everything you can. Google LFO, google square wave, google random things that have to do with producing. Read the manual as well.

But don't forget, JUST KEEP GOING. :w:

Its all just practice,i pretty much taught myself from using the internet and i'm making tunes i like.Yeah maybe not everyone's cuppa but i enjoy making them and feel chuffed when i finish one.It took me years to work out the whole keeping it interesting thing but you are not alone, spend days do different things. If you start trying to make a tune from scratch with very little knowledge of going about it then you are going to get frustrated.Mix it up,spend some days learning how your synths work or making plugin chains that sound good, choping up samples even spend days sample searching through films, other peoples tracks or even video games.
It does get head banging making music if you are chasing someone else's sound(i've been there) so find your own and you will get there much quicker but the key to getting there is practice, reading and researching as much as possible.

Give up what?. Writing music?, if your not feeling it, move on and do something else for a while. Jeez, it aint that serious. All this career talk. I have been around music my whole life. From day one. My dad was a DJ, I put a needle to you be illin on 45 when I was like 6 years old. I have grown up around music and musicians. The only people to get "careers" in music , are people who would still write music , even if they knew they would never get a dime. So IMO you should quit right now and sell everything if you answer no to this question. Would I still want to write music even though I knew I would never get money, fame or recognition from it? Now whatcha got for sale lol Just playin, all the best. Deep breaths lol, go run, get laid, play with dog, look for a better day job do anything but music if you need a break.

If youre primary motive is making it big and having the hobby "pay off", you probably arent really passionate about music.

Pretty much my way of looking at it tbh.

I make music because I enjoy making music. I don't care if anyone else listens to it or likes it - sure, it's nice when they do, but I'd never stop just because they didn't.

I rarely finish any music, but I enjoy just writing and trying to make my loops sound better for the time being. It's a hobby, its inspiring and times, frustrating at others, but in the end its what I love to do. If you are living in the present and not thinking about the future as far as where you want to go with it and what you want your music to sound like then you will be able to just enjoy yourself. I've been a musician now for going on 15 years and I don't see stopping any time soon because I'm not pining over the fact that I don't sound as good as Phace or Spor or whatever.... I just keep working towards it and having fun.

okay guys I might have misword my post there.
I'm not in it for the fame and money, it wasn't my goal to be praised for my music, I just simply want to know that I am doing something right here. I've spent roughly 5 years learning and playing with fl studio, I still find myself to be amateurish in terms of quality and mixdowns, I feel like I will never get to the point where my music actually bangs in a club. Now don't get me wrong about what I'm saying here, I'm talking in terms of quality of the music and not having the expectation of having a mass of a following. I simply need some form of recognition that I'm not just wasting my time on something if not a soul is gonna feel it. Sure, call me unpassionate and that I'm in it for the wrong reasons but I know in my heart that I love music and it's a calling for me but sometimes it gets to the point where I ask myself why I spent all these countless hours/days/weeks trying to get good at something that shows no results or feedback..I don't know...I starve of professional classes somewhere

Forget about getting your tracks played in a club, just make music what you enjoy listening to, and if one day you get approached by a label or other people who really like it, bonus?

I know what you mean about wanting some sort of professional instruction. It can be tough when you feel like you are left to your own devices and your not sure which avenue to go down to get better. I think your tune sounds pretty good honestly. It's not the type of music that I listen to, but in terms of composition and song structure I think its really quite good. You just need to stick with it man. The only bit of advice I could add is to make sure that your instruments/vocals/drums aren't fighting for the same frequency space and things aren't being played in roughly the same octave. Don't be afraid to move some things up and some things down.

After four years of producing I can honestly say I've never once felt like giving up.

Maybe you should try a different role to do with music. You can never have too many decent club nights!

"Grandiose fantasies are a symptom of Resistance. They're they sign of an amateur. The professional has learned that success, like happiness, comes as a by-product of work. The professional concentrates on the work and allows rewards to come or not come, whatever they like.

"Self-doubt can be an ally. This is because it serves as an indicator of aspiration. It reflects love, love of something we dream of doing, and desire, desire to do it. If you find yourself asking yourself (and your friends), "Am I really a writer? Am I really an artist?" chances are you are. The counterfeit innovator is wildly self-confident. The real one is scared to death.

Just a couple excerpts from my favourite book, The War of Art.

Everyone feels like giving up but nobody ever got anything done by being a pussy.

Go write some tracks.

Don't be discouraged if you don't make it big. Be content in the probability that you nor I nor most musicians will ever make it in the industry. The chances are extremely slim and not many people get recognition...If you know this and still want to make music, go for it. I can almost guarantee that there have been revolutionary, innovative composers with potential to drastically change the industry of music, but never got any recognition because, as said, the chances are slim.
...in my opinion
