Or do they have mastering engineers do it for them?

It would be silly if they did...

I mean its not like they haven't got the money to get top tier ME's..

OP: I Skrillex masters his own tracks, and to be honest, when I've heard them in my friend's monitors, they are really pretty badly mastered. They sound way overcompressed. I dun know about deadmau5 though, I honestly don't pay attention to the Skrillex/Deadmau5/and the rest lot that much.

8.3 seconds worth of google got me to this:

http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/int ... e-510973/2

in this day and age, if it's coming out on a proper label, it's most likely getting mastered by someone at a mastering house. unless, of course, it isn't...

I"ve used "Scary Monsters" as a reference track for mix/mastering clients a bunch over the last year; that master is loud, sure, but the mixdown is fantastic. wouldn't worry too much about the master...

I just googled that "scary monsters"

So THATS the track you always hear on TV/random videos. The mix is quality, I agree with Sharm; probably an easy job for the ME.

I'm soooooooo late on this; like ive stated before - I thought Deadmau5 was a meme for like 8 months.

They use Metropolis Mastering. Or rather, Mau5trap records in general does. As does David Guetta.

I couldn't even imagine any tunes I have heard from these guys being sent to a mastering engineer. These tracks are slammed so hard, giving it any sense of dynamic range during the mastering stage would be like holding someone up against a brick wall with a mattress and expecting them to dance.

I've heard that Skrillex gets his tracks mastered. Apparently Noisia and Deadmau5 have done songs for him.

If its on a release then 100% definitely yes. This goes for 90% of producers who are relatively successful as well

This doesn't mean you should pay tons to get your tracks mastered, if the songs good enough without mastering its good enough for a release and a label should be willing to pay for your mastering

How could I not?

They don't make music I like; nor do any of my friends like that type of music.

If you live your life only seeking for things of your interest and surround yourself in like-minded people you can avoid fads pretty easily.

I'd be surprised if they mastered they're own tracks given they're popularity and influence in the music industry. However I've recently noticed that Skrillex's songs are pretty loud compared to other producer's songs... makes for a good live performance though ;-)
