I just received this movie and i thought it was the weirdest shit i've ever seen. crazy surreal settings that seem to come out of a Max Earnst painting, too bad i dint have any purp haze or white rhino, but definitely worth watchin sober as well. another reason to pick this up is it has some gnarly electronic music circa 1973 by Alain Goraguer. this flick was way ahead of its time. the animation is sketchy but thats what gives this one its flavor. peace

The film depicts a future in which human beings, known as "Oms" (a word play on the French language word hommes, meaning men), have been brought by the giant Draags to the Draags' home planet, where they are kept as pets (with collars). The Draags are an alien race which is humanoid in shape but ten times larger than humans, with blue skin, fanlike earlobes and huge, protruding eyes. The Draags also live much longer than human beings - one Draag week equals a human year. Some Oms are domesticated as pets, but others run wild, and are periodically exterminated. The Draags' treatment of the Oms is ironically contrasted with their high level of technological and spiritual development.

I think it was done originally in French so when I got my copy in English I automatically thought, the translations are gonna be off but you wouldn't have known the difference as it is just as mystifying. here's some info on wik.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastic_Planet

i wouldn't say i'm a huge fan of wierd animation bcuz i don't have a big collection of that sort of stuff, but i'd like to know what other titles i should look out for.

i'll post more info on each as they're all really good especially the Quay Brothers stuff, amazing dark stop acton camera work.

Yeah, this one is amazing. Also make sure to see Cat Soup (Nekojiru-So).
I noticed it's actually on Google Video. Good stuff!

Actually it's far from. It's got plenty of unsettling and weird bad-trip imagery going on, and it's pretty much about coping with death, the cycle of life and such. Or something. :)

Absolutely! I grabbed the studio Ghibli box set a few years back, and it's all just amazing. I think Nausicaa is my favorite, but Grave of The Fireflies has to be one of the most serious movies I know. It's about the fire bombing and subsequent nuking of Nagasaki, and is based on the true story of the author.

Both highly recommended if you haven't seen them!

Fire and Ice. This one I just saw for the first time. First saw it laying on the racks at a small rental store when I was a kid but thought it was som'n like a cheesier version of a Conan movie or som'n. Absolutely amazing backgrounds and the animation is fluid. The battle scenes reminded me of 300 especially the slow motion parts where dudes headz r gettin split.

It may not fall under the weird category more like fantasy, but the creatures, the bodacious babe, the backgrounds, and soundtracks are awesome. If you've ever seen the original 'The Lord of The Rings' animation flick, then you'll recognize the same technique using real models to track the body in motion. I believe the technique was used alot better on this one tho.

'It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became ? and remains ? one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE & ICE.'
