What do you guys feel about just DJ's and DJ producers? I went into the DJ route in the beginning spun a few gigs but I quickly realized that it was just not fulfilling and ended up meeting a lot of douche bags who are just their to stab you so i went into full producing and i have never been happier ever since. What are your guys thoughts?

Lets not forget that music is art. DJ-only people are essentially just art museum curators, taking crowds on journeys through other people's creations and artistry. Those who solely DJ have a passion for the art undoubtedly, but lack the creative desire and motive to become a creator of one of the pieces in the museum.
Love for the sound = DJ
Love for the sound + creativity + passion to make = Producer or Producer/DJ

I disagree with the creativity part of that. DJs have to be creative in order to be successful.
People appreciate music differently, some want to create their own, others enjoy playing their favourite songs to crowds. It's not merely DJs are people who appreciate music but aren't good enough to produce.
Also, DJs who are well known for only DJing are often better DJs than producers who DJ. (many exceptions but still a valid point i feel)

A tight mix can make the incoming tune sound 10 times better. Ben UFO could make JLS sound good. o_0

in relation to dubstep, there is no winner, im a big fan of someone who produces their own stuff and implements it in a mix, i'm a big fan of someone who produces a track for a specific mix, ie, something that will 100% work with a tune and just blow minds.
i'm a big fan of just DJ's, generally, if they aren't producing, they spend that much time around the music, studying the music etc etc etc that they just know it like the back of their own hand, some of the stuff the DJ-only or DJ-part-time-producers do in this genre are absolutely amazing.
when it comes to other genres, generally, the way i see it is, if you DJ house, and don't produce anything, your a shit tnuc who can't be bothered getting a job.

If someone does something that I like and does it well, I'm a fan. I don't really see the point in complicating it any further than that.

these days even people who claim to "jsut dj" do other things, such as run a label etc, do an A&R, run a blog, blah blah blah.
but i do agree with the notion that djing isnt really that creative, or in the very least not as creative as producing, that goes without saying.
a lot of djs are overrated in my opinion, more so then producers becuase at least with production its a lot harder to "be good" at- despite it being subjective in taste.

It's easy to be a shit producer, and it's easy to be a shit DJ. It's hard to be a good producer and it's hard to be a good DJ.

Comparing DJ'ing to producing is kinda like comparing painting to fencing. Srsly, they're two different things that require a different skillset and are creative and interesting in their own ways.
If you respect one artform over the other, go ahead. But it's really pointless to say that one is 'more creative' than the other.

the worst thing is producers who cant mix but are booked solely on their production skills. can ruin a whole night tbh, different skills, people shouldn't assume that because someone can make music that they can DJ. in the same way loads of my mates say to me 'oh jamie you like music and you DJ, why dont you start producing?' and the answer is that firstly i have no desire to, and secondly i dont think i'd be very good at it. they dont necessarily go hand in hand

Its the mix vs. the single tune innit? Just like a single tune merges original, different sounds together to form a piece of music for a relatively short period of time, the mix is an extended collage of less logical, pre-existing tracks blended to form a single continuous mix. They're both quite musical and creative when done well and I have lots of love for both.

Personally, I've got respect for anyone who puts a great deal into their work be it production, DJ'ing, or both - everyone's got their own way. You can certainly excel in either, and in my view both require a robust understanding of the music. I do find that exploring one throws a lot of light on the other though.

i just feel like a good producer will have more potential to be successful then a good DJ
