Anyone doing anything interesting?

Curious to hear about who is doing interesting things besides just making music in the box?

Anyone doing noise projects? Working with adruino building controllers? Doing experimental interactive media? Working in unique programming enivornments? Building equipment? Working with tape? Building modular units? Circuit Bending? Anything that isn't just the same tired old shit.

Would love to hear what everyone is getting up to. That being said, I am going to be posting a massive library of field recordings recorded to various tape formats here in a bit, and what to see what else is being done and by who on this forum?

thats cool man, what unique attributes do you think will get you into the RBMA, are you doing anything interesting?

Like I said, I am curious about people thinking outside of the box and utilizing possibly obscure techniques for the sake of the process.

my friends the soap company, a band from croydon, recently released a record with recorded samples of the london riots over an industiral techno beat, really interesting stuff, me on the other hand am not so interesting, lol slash as soon as i say something about myself i shall be mocked but in a nutshell, had a few releases got more planned on the dub reggae front, had good responses, felt confident enough to apply, that is all really.

Again thanks for the response this isn't what I am talking about. I am talking about producing something interesting be it hardware (circuit bending, adruino) , working with unique formats or programming environments, unique live setups, building hardware, utilizing unique or novel recording techniques. I know Basic A will have something to say.

I am not really interested in people applying to RBMA (no offense), its not that interesting unless you are doing something unique. Also just out of curiosity what makes you think your RBMA material?

I made an instrument out of a long piece of plastic PVC tubing. I stretched rubber bands across the opening at the top at various lengths and put a spring inside the chamber (from a kids toy microphone) for some natural spring reverb. Outside of just plucking the rubber bands I was also able to blow on them to create cool vibrations at different tones. When I hit the open top with the palm of my hand it created a bass drum-like tone and slapping the sides of the pipe also created some cool resonances. All in all, not a bad couple of hours spent. I just wanted to challenge myself to make an instrument out of stuff I had laying around the house. Everybody should try it :)

A couple of friends have been doing a lot of experimentation with databending - ie. editing audio files in non-audio software. For example you can open a wav in notepad or photoshop and mess around with the raw code, a lot of the time you might well break the file or just end up with a few seconds of silence, but occasionally something interesting can come out of it - takes a lot of time and patience though ;)

I want to investigate a bit more deeply myself really, the same concept can be applied across various media like editing images in audacity and applying audio effects to it, etc.

Quite an old concept and not really as ground-breaking as the things listed in the OP, but still...

building subwoofer, driver and all. extremely slow at it, but still. after that, going to build an analogue synth.

I'm putting together a live show for my EP release right now. I'm gonna be playing guitar, keyboards, drum pads, and have a neat little visual show. I've got this big semi-transparent sheet that I'm gonna project an abstract-style video on to and I'm gonna play behind it, and maybe put a flashlight behind me so you can see my silhouette on the sheet.
It's gonna be raaaaaaad.

Well I also work with tape and do a lot of field recordings & foley work. Since last year I have been taking boat trips alone into the ocean at night and recording and also making music out there. I planned to do an album or at least an EP of that material, but time and weather has been an issue. I'd love to be out there recording during a storm, but electronics don't really allow that. I was looking into waterproofing one of my recorders though.

Apart from that I also experiment with data corruption techniques for both audio and video work. I've been doing that since the 90s, it's more of a weird hobby than anything, but I would like to incorporate some of it into music more. I do this a lot with old technology. I have an old pro VHS editing system and I have a lot of fun corrupting and editing video tapes I find. I would love to do this with film, but it's way too expensive and precious, though I'm sure I will sooner or later.

I want to blend the data corruption and circuit bending by destroying and melting a synthesizer as I record it. I have tried this before, but got shocked which isn't very fun! Haha. That's inspired from hearing of a techno producer submerging a synth under water to make a specific sound. Might just be some techno-mythology of course. I think it was Josh Wink, but it's been probably 15 years...

Yeah man... I'll play guitar with my teeth, keyboard with my hands, and flop my dick around on my MPD for drums.

serious bump on this. I wish more dj's would do more stuff like this when they play out. I don't expect it seeing as so many of them aren't classically trained so they probably couldn't play a lot of their songs but still, it's really cool when I hear people are doing it. I'd love to hear a recording if you have the chance to when you get around to doing it.

where in my comment did you see that I said "dj'ng is playing keyboards and the like live"? all I said is it would be cool if more dj's did that... I never tried to claim that it's a dj's responsibility to do this.

edit: and it seems pretty obvious that I meant producers who DJ, not straight dj's that just make mixes and don't produce. P.S. RJD2 and Bonobo are 2 DJ/ producers that I've seen incorporate and play live instruments themselves.

Sheeiiit. Playing instruments and performing your own songs live is not DJ'ing. You need to get the vernacular right.

Anyways, this is a major thread derailer, and this is a cool thread.
