Fellas,

A growing trend speaking to the mainstream (I realize "the scene" works a bit differently) is the embrace of vinyl as opposed to the compact disc for music collection. People say that vinyl sounds warmer, and maybe it does. I understand that vinyl is essentially an analog pressing of the sound, so there is no loss (however minimal it may or may not have ever been) due to sample rates and so forth. What I'm struggling to understand is the relationship between these different formats start to finish.

Hypothetically a clean vinyl cut is the ideal reproduction of original sound. Numerically speaking, the CD format may have at one time been the pinnacle of digital technology, but at this time, the compact disc bit rate is woefully low by comparison to other digital formats, including for example DVD audio.

How does this relate to mp3 reproductions of sound? I'm assuming it is uncontestably true that any sound file of any format, if "ripped" from a CD, will suffer, at minimum, the same inadequacies as the CD sample rate suffers.

What for a vinyl rip? I haven't found a good explanation as to the relationship between these sample rates - for example, if CD quality dictates 44,100 samples per second at 16-bit accuracy, what digital format is required to catch all of that? There are all these different mp3 formats (v0, 320...), are any of them meeting CD quality? And, more importantly, if one were to start translating his vinyl collection into a digital format, would it be possible to exceed CD quality in terms of sample rate and accuracy?

I'm thinking here of sampling, among other things, but I'm also thinking simply of my music collection. Some of the vinyl I want is extremely expensive and frankly I'll probably never get to hear it (my wife would murder me if I dropped $250 on a record, when I've got a perfectly good CD right there), but as something of an audiophile... well, can someone shed some light on this? Cursory googling isn't quite getting it and you guys are, as far as I know, sound experts some of you.

I sample anything and everything, I have a mountain of vinyl that i spend no more than 1 dollar a piece on. I could probably get anywhere from 250-500 records for 250 dollars.
Although, I use that to make music, not dubstep.

Stop trying to find out what "the scene" is into, or what has the best "quality" its all going to get put down to that great 12- bit sound when its in your SP-1200, or 16-bit for an MPC2000/xl.

You should learn to make music, Learn to use samples, Then MAYBE stressing this stuff would be worth it.

Nope, just think it's unnecessary unless I'm addressing a specific point that people would be confused about if I didn't quote.

correct me if im wrong, a wav is better then vynil, it is the rawest form... a 50mb pluss file. thats only for electronic music made on a daw mind you, if you were recording strait onto an analog mixing desk whith real instruments then yes vynil is better.
