id say bite the bullet and get tracktor or some kind of software sampler. you can still use vinyl with tracktor and incorporate samples/loops with it also. or you could go all out and get ableton. just a suggestion. i'm not sure if you can use ni maschine without a computer but you might want to look into that. or any kind of sampler for that matter if you don't want to ride the software bandwagon.

You might want to look at the Boss SP series samplers ? They're good for triggering samples and you can also make some sample based beats on them if you want to

A phrase sampler, the Yamaha SU700 was made exactly for that. If you can find one with the SCSI ZIP it's one of the best phrase samplers ever made. There's also the SU200. An SP202 will also work and takes Compact Flash. Also check out the Kaossilator and Electribe samplers like ES1 and the nicer ESX.

No need to be another guy in the crowd with an APC and a laptop.

Cheers for that - nothing fancy just a basic phrase sampler that i can have some samples loaded onto & press a button & it'll play. What would you recommend?

What's your budget? The SP202 is cheap and easy, also portable. The older Electribe ES1 is a decent little sampler and should be less than 100 quid used.

The Yamaha is more for performance and live remixing with vinyl.

No prob, I've had lots of samplers over the years. Yeah ebay or gumtree or whatever local classifieds. Those things sold like crazy so they are everywhere, I have bought and sold 3. It's really handy, can also be used as a portable field recorder. Make sure it has a Compact Flash card, or buy a compatible one. I don't think they can handle over 64MB! Check out newer models too like SP303 and 404, might be worth the bit of extra cash for you.

Edit: wow just rechecked, SP202 only takes 4MB cards. I guess it's been longer than I thought since I had one...

Check the newer ones out, or the Korg ES1 which is the same price but much newer and take 64MB cards. About twice the physical size.

Get a fuck load of samples together and cut a dubplate. Cheaper than buying any sampler :D

Definitely something to consider, I'd throw some locked grooves on there too.

Locked grooves are interesting. I was thinking we could do a locked groove B-side on a Dubliminal vinyl at some point. 25 heavy, rootical, locked-groove loops. Would be so much fun to mix! Nobody's done that for dubstep yet as far as I'm aware.

I have quite a few techno and battle records with locked grooves, and we did a dnb one at DOA a few years ago. A dubstep one would definitely be interesting. I'd buy that.

If you already have an iPhone or iPod Touch, or even an iPad, lots of apps that are not expensive. Get the Maschine or Gridlok app (there are more out there though, those just come to mind right now), and then a 1/8" to RCA composite pair, plug in to an extra line-in on the mixer, press buttons.

Well nothing wrong with that, he just specified vinyl so I assumed he did not want to go digital. I didn't want him to get the impression it was the only way.
