from what i understand the launchpad can be made to control any parameter in ableton, so this would include controlling VST's. hopefully someone who has one will be able to confirm this..

if you set the launchpad as the input on a midi channel, it will work fine to play as a piano/midi controller for any synth.
in addition, if you set the midi channel to OUTPUT to the launchpad as well, then then launchpad buttons will light up as you press them. if you set your midi channel to "record" or "overdub" then it will put the notes you play into a piano roll.

ehhh, have you confirmed that though bassinine? i have an apc and it automatically maps everything for me when i set the input to apc..
from what ive read you would have to download a python script for the launchpad to do something like that

yeah, i had one for a year or so - takes about 2 seconds to set up. and are you sure you can't do this with an apc? just open a synth, select midi to and from the apc - set to input and record, and you should hear something. at least if you're using ableton (might have to de-select the apc from the input/output options menu). i'm not trying to patronize you, i just find it strange that a midi controller won't send/receive midi data to a midi channel.
regarding the launchpad - the only thing bad about it is the fact that it's hard to tell what note/octave you're playing when just looking at the launchpad.

Yeah it worked before when ableton was buggin out lol. But it was only playing one note. I have an mpk though. But yeah think it would look cool someone "playing" a launchpad.

Madeon is a great example of exactly that imo (at the 2:30 mark)

don't want to be a negative nancy, but why on earth don't you just get a keyboard? that's what they're designed for. i can't imagine anything worse than trying to play a tune on a launchpad.

Look up the "Fretpad", it runs with Max4Live.
Here is a video of me poorly representing it:
I've made the scale I'm playing in light up as well so I know what I'm doing.
If you get Fretpad working I'll tell ya how I did all that jazz
Please disregard the piss-poor playing, I had barely owned the thing a week. (Currently working on a new [much better] jam to upload soon jajaja)

you can use yellow\green : octave 1 green, octave 2 yellow, octave 3 green..... when you click a button it will light up red
and the (<) buttons on the side can change octaves
and the buttons above can light up to show a metronome
